US startups raised $19.44B across 492 companies in July 2026, a month defined by a convergence of mega-rounds in artificial intelligence infrastructure, energy, and robotics that pushed the late-stage total to $12.26B — 63% of all capital raised. The top four rounds alone accounted for more than $5.95B, led by Joulent, Atoms, Fireworks AI, and SambaNova. Beneath the headline figure, 401 Series A and early-stage deals collectively raised $4.45B, reinforcing the depth of the innovation pipeline across the country even as capital concentrated sharply at the top.

AI companies captured 67% of total capital: 196 companies raised $13.08B
Energy and power infrastructure commanded three of the top five rounds: Joulent ($1.75B), Commonwealth Fusion Systems ($1.0B), and Antora Energy ($550M)
California maintained its dominance with $10.49B across 161 deals, representing 54% of national capital
Texas surged to second place with $2.37B, driven almost entirely by Joulent’s landmark raise
New York ranked third with $2.05B across 66 companies, representing 10.6% of national capital
The median deal held at $6.0M while the average reached $39.5M — the gap between the two reflects the extraordinary concentration of capital in 65 rounds at $50M+, which accounted for $15.87B of the total

July 2026: The Month in Detail

Joulent’s $1.75B raise was the largest single round of the month and a landmark deal for the energy infrastructure sector. The Houston-based company develops multi-gigawatt power systems combining natural gas turbines, long-duration battery storage, and renewable generation to supply reliable, large-scale power to AI data centers and industrial loads. The round signals that investors are betting on the energy infrastructure layer underneath the AI economy as heavily as on the AI models themselves — a thesis that showed up in multiple deals across the month.

Atoms, the Los Angeles robotics company building physical AI systems for mining, food infrastructure, and transportation, raised $1.7B backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Bain Capital Ventures, and Craft Ventures. The company’s approach of developing task-specific industrial machines rather than general-purpose robots attracted capital at scale — a validation of the physical AI thesis that also showed up in Walden Robotics’ $300M raise from Cambridge, Massachusetts, one of the largest early-stage rounds in recent memory for a hardware company. Industrial robotics is emerging as a distinct, capital-intensive category in its own right.

AI infrastructure defined the month’s software narrative. Fireworks AI ($1.51B) and Together AI ($800M) both closed major late-stage rounds for platforms that sit between foundation models and enterprise deployment, serving growing demand for inference, fine-tuning, and model serving capacity. SambaNova’s $1B raise extended its position as a hardware and software platform for enterprise AI. Etched ($300M) and Meshy AI ($400M) added to a month where AI chip and 3D content generation platforms also commanded institutional-scale capital. The AI infrastructure cohort alone raised more than $4.3B in July.

Energy was the other defining theme. Beyond Joulent, Commonwealth Fusion Systems raised $1B to advance its SPARC demonstration device toward net energy gain, and Antora Energy pulled in $550M for its thermal energy storage systems that convert renewable power into industrial heat and electricity on demand. Antares ($370M) added nuclear microreactor technology to the month’s energy mix. Three distinct approaches to the energy transition — fusion, thermal storage, and fission — all commanding nine-figure rounds in a single month reflects the breadth of investor conviction that energy infrastructure is the decade’s most pressing buildout.

Quantum computing made a notable appearance with Oratomic’s $300M Series A for neutral-atom quantum hardware in South Pasadena. HUboo’s $270M Series A from Founders Fund, SV Angel, and Index Ventures built cross-border logistics infrastructure. Chai Discovery’s $400M advanced AI-driven drug discovery. The month’s breadth — AI, energy, robotics, quantum, logistics, and biotech all claiming large rounds — underscores that the 2026 venture market is not a single-sector story despite AI’s outsized headline share.

California maintained its dominance with $10.49B across 161 deals, more than half the national total, driven by its concentration of AI infrastructure, robotics, and climate technology. Texas’s $2.37B second-place finish was almost entirely attributable to Joulent. Massachusetts ($1.55B) benefited from Commonwealth Fusion Systems, Walden Robotics, and a healthy biotech and software cohort. New York ranked third among states with $2.05B across 66 companies, led by Wonder’s $650M and CAIS’s $170M.

Looking Ahead: US Startup Funding Q3 2026

July’s data makes a strong case that the US startup ecosystem has entered a phase of bifurcation. Capital is concentrating rapidly among companies that can credibly claim positions in AI infrastructure, energy, and defense — sectors where sovereign-scale problems justify sovereign-scale rounds. The median deal at $6.0M tells a different story than the average at $39.5M: the majority of funded companies are early and mid-stage, operating at conventional venture scales, while a small number of platforms are capturing an outsized share of available capital. The $50M+ cohort of just 65 deals accounted for 81.6% of all capital raised in the month.

The AI infrastructure wave shows no sign of decelerating. With Fireworks AI, Together AI, SambaNova, and Etched all closing in the same month, the market is pricing in sustained demand for inference, model serving, and AI silicon capacity well beyond what current supply can support. Energy companies building for the AI data center buildout occupy an adjacent and equally capital-intensive position. The convergence of these two investment theses in a single month — and across multiple deal sizes and stages — suggests 2026’s back half will continue to favor platforms at the intersection of compute and power.

Methodology — US Startup Funding Report: July 2026

Data sourced from Crunchbase. Funding amounts reflect disclosed round sizes in USD at time of publication. Stage classifications follow AlleyWatch’s taxonomy: Early-Stage includes Pre-Seed, Seed, Angel, and Accelerator rounds; Late-Stage includes Series C and beyond. Corporate rounds, PE, and debt financing are excluded from stage totals. Companies are included based on Crunchbase-listed US headquarters. Delaware-registered entities without operational US headquarters are excluded from state totals.
