Modvion wins EU support to build wooden wind turbine towers, with funding of up to €39.1M to boost clean energy manufacturing in Europe.

Gothenburg, Sweden-based Modvion, a wood technology company, has been chosen by the European Commission to proceed with Grant Agreement Preparation through the Innovation Fund.

The grant, which can be as much as €39.1M, will be utilised to set up series production for wooden wind turbine towers.

The EU Innovation Fund is one of the world’s largest funding programs for innovative low-carbon technologies.

Financed through an estimated €40B in revenues from the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), it supports projects with high potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, boost cleantech manufacturing, and drive investment in cutting-edge technologies that advance Europe’s transition to climate neutrality.

Out of 359 applications, Modvion was selected as one of 61 projects to receive funding from the Innovation Fund, totalling €2.9B.

These projects are expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by around 221 million tonnes over the next ten years.

The project will produce wooden wind turbine towers that can reach up to 200 meters tall, designed for turbines with a capacity of 6 megawatts or more.

The EU Innovation Fund, one of the largest funding programs for low-carbon technologies, helps projects that can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and boost clean technology manufacturing in Europe.

“Increasing renewable energy infrastructure and production is strategically vital for the EU. Modvion contributes to that build out while bringing together two strong European industries, wood and wind power,” says Maria-Lina Hedlund, CEO at Modvion.

Modvion: Specialises in wood technology

Led by Maria-Lina Hedlund, Modvion specialises in wood technology, with a patented wind turbine tower made from engineered wood.

By replacing emission-heavy materials such as steel and concrete, Modvion’s wooden towers deliver significant reductions in carbon emissions.

Due to its modular design, the towers are easy to transport and enable cost-effective, taller turbines that increase energy production and financial returns.

In partnership with Vestas, the world’s largest wind turbine manufacturer, Modvion erected its first commercial wooden tower in 2024, which has now been operating successfully for more than 15,000 hours.

The project is part-financed by the Swedish Energy Agency.

“The Innovation Fund grant will enable Modvion to scale production capacity to meet the demand from the European wind industry. Our towers enable taller wind turbines to increase the efficiency and profitability of wind energy, all while replacing hard-to-abate steel and concrete,” says Maria-Lina Hedlund.
