PYPL|EPS Est $1.28 (35 analysts)|Rev Est $8.48B|Reports 2026-07-28 BMO

Wall Street consensus. PayPal Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: PYPL) is scheduled to report second-quarter 2026 results on July 28 before the opening bell. The consensus among 35 analysts calls for earnings per share of $1.28 on revenue of $8.48B. Estimate ranges span $1.25 to $1.36 on the EPS side and $8.29B to $8.75B for the top line, reflecting a relatively tight band of expectations for the digital payments giant.

Estimate trajectory signals caution. Analyst sentiment has deteriorated over the past three months, with EPS estimates drifting down from $1.34 to the current $1.28 consensus, representing a decline of 4.5% over the 90-day period. The 30-day window shows stabilization, with estimates unchanged at $1.28, suggesting the recent downward revision cycle may have run its course. This pattern of lowered expectations typically reflects concerns about either competitive pressures in the payments ecosystem or macro headwinds affecting transaction volumes and take rates.

Year-over-year comparison shows headwinds. The consensus figures imply an 8.6% decline in earnings per share compared to the $1.40 reported in the second quarter of 2025, even as revenue is expected to grow 2.3% from the year-ago level of $8.29B. This divergence between top-line growth and bottom-line contraction points to margin pressure within the business. In the year-ago quarter, PayPal generated net income of $1.26B on a net margin of 15.2%, with operating income of $1.5B. If revenue grows modestly while earnings decline, investors will be scrutinizing whether margin compression stems from increased competition, elevated marketing spend, regulatory costs, or shifts in the transaction mix toward lower-margin products.

Profitability trends under the microscope. The expected earnings decline against modest revenue growth suggests that operating leverage is working in reverse. The year-ago net margin of 15.2% sets a high bar that appears difficult to maintain in the current environment. Whether PayPal is investing heavily in new products, facing pressure from alternative payment platforms, or absorbing higher fraud prevention and compliance costs will be critical questions for management to address.

Track record matters. PayPal has historically been a consistent reporter, though the company operates in an increasingly competitive digital payments landscape where transaction volume trends, active account growth, and total payment volume are closely monitored indicators. Investors have learned to focus not just on the headline numbers but on key performance indicators, including branded checkout penetration, Venmo monetization progress, and merchant services growth. Any deviation from expectations tends to move the stock significantly given its position as a bellwether for the broader fintech sector.

Stock positioning. Shares currently trade at $55.30 as the company approaches its earnings release. The stock’s positioning heading into the report will influence how investors react to any surprises, with technical levels and recent momentum playing a role in post-earnings volatility. Given the 90-day estimate revision pattern, the market may have already priced in some degree of disappointment, potentially setting up a more favorable risk-reward if results merely meet the lowered bar.

What to Watch: Focus on total payment volume growth and active account trends as leading indicators of ecosystem health. Venmo monetization updates and any guidance on second-half profitability will help investors assess whether the earnings decline is a temporary reset or the beginning of a more prolonged normalization. Transaction take rates and the mix between peer-to-peer and merchant services revenue warrant attention, as shifts in business mix can materially impact profitability even when headline growth remains positive.
