Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

Budgeting apps promise to help users gain control of their finances by providing a view into their spending habits and transactions. But with so many budgeting tools on the market today, it’s not always clear what makes each platform stand out.

That’s why we’ve ranked the nine best budgeting apps of 2026 according to our comprehensive methodology. From simpler, intuitive apps like Quicken Simplifi to comprehensive ecosystems like Origin, each option has its own strengths to accommodate diverse financial needs and goals.

Best Budgeting Apps of 2026

According to our budgeting apps ranking methodology, Rocket Money scored the highest, earning the most points overall based on value, reviews, features and support. Although Rocket Money is our top choice, different budgeting apps accommodate different financial scenarios. Check out our best-rated options:

Rocket Money: Best for subscription management
Empower: Best for free budgeting
Quicken Simplifi: Best for anticipating expenses
PocketGuard: Best for automated budgeting
Wallet by BudgetBakers: Best for international budgets
Origin: Best for investors and complex finances
Honeydue: Best for couples or household tracking
Spendee: Best for simple or beginner budgeting
Monarch: Best for flexible, customizable budgeting

Compare the Best Budgeting Apps

All apps on our list offer basic features like bank syncing, category-based budgets, spending insights and goal tracking. That said, each budgeting app has slightly different features that suit varying needs. Compare our ratings to see which features make each budgeting platform stand out:

Rocket Money: Best for Subscription Management

Quick facts:

Our rating: 4.8 out of 5
Monthly price: $7–$14 (free plan available)
Top feature: Rocket Money concierge lets you cancel subscriptions in the app

In addition to standard budgeting features, Rocket Money offers several ways for users to proactively identify and reduce expenses. For example, the app’s concierge service helps you identify and cancel unwanted subscriptions directly in the app. There’s also an option to have Rocket Money’s team negotiate bills on your behalf.

Pros:

Extensive features, including subscription tracking and cancellation
High reviews on the Google Play and iOS app stores
Free and paid plans available

Cons:

Charges additional fees for subscription cancellation and bill negotiation
Features like net-worth tracking and account sharing require a paid plan

Empower: Best for Free Budgeting

Quick facts:

Our rating: 4.4 out of 5
Monthly price: Free
Top feature: A comprehensive dashboard shows all your accounts in one place

Empower’s financial dashboard makes it easy to see all your accounts at once. You can sync checking, savings, investment and credit card accounts to view your full financial picture. From there, you can create and track goals, build a monthly budget and plan for retirement. One other major benefit? It’s completely free to use.

Pros:

Budgeting tools and dashboard are completely free
Can sync accounts and see your entire financial picture
Includes retirement planning tools and automatic insights

Cons:

Does not offer overspending alerts or credit score tracking
Has below-average reviews on the Google Play store

Quicken Simplifi: Best for Anticipating Expenses

Quick facts:

Our rating: 4.4 out of 5
Monthly price: $5.99–$8.49
Top feature: “Watchlist” helps you track spending by category or merchant

Like Empower, Quicken Simplifi lays out all your finances on one dashboard. It also looks ahead by considering recurring bills and savings goals to estimate what you can safely spend. And if you tend to overspend in certain areas, the Watchlist feature lets you monitor specific categories or merchants more closely.

Pros:

Can automatically set aside money for savings goals
Calculates what you have available to spend after expenses
Easy to upgrade to Quicken Business & Personal for business expenses

Cons:

No free trial or free plan available
Does not offer credit score tracking

PocketGuard: Best for Automated Budgeting

Quick facts:

Our rating: 4.4 out of 5
Monthly price: $12.99 (free plan available)
Top feature: “In My Pocket” shows your available discretionary spending

PocketGuard automatically categorizes your spending and estimates your disposable income. These features help give you an idea of your most up-to-date financial status without spending much time manually logging information or allocating every dollar. It also offers features like its debt payoff planner, so you can quickly see your projected payoff date.

Pros:

Simple to use
Offers a one-time purchase option for lifetime access

Cons:

Free version has limited account connectivity
No live customer support available

Wallet by BudgetBakers: Best for International Budgets

Quick facts:

Our rating: 4.3 out of 5
Monthly price: $5.99 (free plan available)
Top feature: Shared wallets support multiple currencies

Wallet by BudgetBakers supports multiple currencies and automatically converts balances according to current exchange rates. This makes the app particularly useful for users with accounts or clients in more than one country.

Wallet by BudgetBakers also has a Group Sharing feature, where multiple users can see the same budget. The primary user can also customize what the group members can see or change.

Pros:

Simple user interface
Premium access costs less than most competitors

Cons:

No live customer support available
Free plan does not support bank syncing
Category customization is limited

Origin: Best for Investors and Complex Finances

Quick facts:

Our rating: 4.3 out of 5
Monthly price: $12.99
Top feature: AI advisor tools provide custom recommendations and insights

Like other apps, Origin lets you see multiple bank, investment, credit card and retirement accounts on a single dashboard. However, it also offers several features that other apps don’t. That includes tax filing and estate planning within the app, forecasting tools to see how major life events could affect your net worth and an AI advisor that can answer questions related to your finances.

Pros:

Offers advanced tools like tax filing and estate planning in the app
Connects users to certified financial planners for an additional fee

Cons:

No free plan available
Setup can take longer than other, simpler apps

Honeydue: Best for Couples or Household Tracking

Quick facts:

Our rating: 4.1 out of 5
Monthly price: Free
Top feature: In-app chat makes it easy for households to communicate about shared finances

Honeydue is specifically designed for joint users within a household. In addition to typical functions like bill reminders and bank syncing, Honeydue has unique features like an in-app chat thread and expense splitting for couples sharing finances. You can also connect multiple accounts while still easily seeing who each account belongs to.

Pros:

Completely free to use
Can customize categories and what your partner sees
Able to split expenses between users

Cons:

Not available on desktop
Does not have subscription or credit score tracking

Spendee: Best for Simple or Beginner Budgeting

Quick facts:

Our rating: 4 out of 5
Monthly price: $1.99–$5.99 (free plan available)
Top feature: AI receipt scanning uploads and categorizes expenses automatically

Spendee offers a simpler interface than competitors like Origin or Monarch, but it still provides users with many useful budgeting features. These include custom expense categories, bank syncing and shared wallets. It also offers an AI receipt scanning feature to automatically upload expenses with your phone.

Pros:

Lower cost than most competitors
Easy-to-use, simple user interface

Cons:

Can’t link to investment accounts
No live customer support available

Monarch: Best for Flexible, Customizable Budgeting

Quick facts:

Our rating: 4 out of 5
Monthly price: $14.99
Top feature: Custom rules help organize transactions how you want

Monarch is a highly versatile personal finance app that allows users to customize how transactions show up on their dashboard. To each transaction, you can add tags, link it to a goal, mark it as recurring and more. For even more options, custom rules let you update, move and sort transactions in dozens of ways.

Pros:

Option to rollover leftover money to the next month
Several visuals make it easy to track income and expenditures
Custom rules improve categorization accuracy

Cons:

No free plan available
No live customer support available

Free vs. Paid Budgeting Apps

Of the budgeting apps that made our list, Empower and Honeydue are the only ones that are completely free and do not offer a paid plan option. Four others offer a free version with the option to upgrade to a paid plan:

Rocket Money
PocketGuard
Wallet by BudgetBakers
Spendee

Functionality is usually limited within a free plan, though features vary. Free plans often limit automatic categorization, customization options and available insights.

Best Mint Alternatives

Mint was a free budgeting app owned by Intuit that shut down in 2024. Like many other budgeting apps, it offered bank syncing, transaction categorization and clean visuals to identify trends.

Monarch has positioned itself as a strong Mint alternative with a modern interface, better syncing and additional features. That said, while Mint was free with ads, Monarch uses a subscription-based model.

If you’re looking for a completely free alternative, Empower is a strong option. Empower doesn’t offer as many budget customization options as Monarch, but it does have an all-in-one dashboard showing your expenses, investments and retirement data.

Are Budgeting Apps Safe?

Because budgeting platforms handle sensitive financial information, it’s important that these apps have the necessary security in place to protect your data.

For starters, data in your app should be encrypted. Reputable apps will have information about their encryption systems publicly available. All of the apps on our top budgeting apps list have bank-level encryption.

Additionally, look for apps with two-factor authentication and grant financial institutions read-only access. Read-only access means that, while you can see bank information in the app, the app cannot move your money around or conduct transactions.

Our Methodology

To determine our top nine highest-rated budgeting apps, we ranked 20 platforms across 23 comprehensive factors. Each factor fell into one of the following rating categories:

Pricing (15%)
Connectivity and functionality (30%)
Reviews and availability (10%)
Key features (30%)
Security and support (15%)
