My take:
A funny and sad film. You feel for the young man as he navigates life in Stalinist Poland, trying to be a good Christian in a land that had made that a terrible burden. It was a time of snitches and jailhouse beatings. Any signs of non-conformity prompted repression, if not outright violence. Overall, it’s a well-made and satisfying tale. I’m glad I watched it at ⭐.

Plot (Spoilers!):
A young boy in Stalinist Poland has to move from his small town to Warsaw. His father defected to the West. He is a target of the authorities.
His mother arranges for him to stay with an old family friend, Ida. Or Emma. It depends upon when you ask her, because she is a habitual liar. It’s not out of malice, it’s an artifact of living in a dangerous time and place. She is also a little nuts.
The young man is introduced to the world of horse riding, a passion of the family friend. But horse riding is a relic of the aristocracy that the Revolution had dethroned. Once again he is targeted, this time by a rat-fink of a classmate. He struggles to contend with that, with being a good Christian when that is nearly a crime, and with the family friend who takes incredible risks to maintain their small equestrian club.
At the end, the family friend’s antics go too far. The pair ride through a military training range, raising an alarm. The authorities have had enough. The family friend manages to avoid prison, but is told she must leave Warsaw. The two must part ways.

In an unbelievable turn of events, more live footage of the Velvet Underground has been found in a San Francisco archive! These clips arrive from a 1971 KRON-TV interview with Bill Graham, the owner of the Fillmore, a local venue.
Footage of the band is extremely scarce, with most of the footage focusing on the crowd. The most exciting moment happens at 1:16, where Nico can be seen singing along to All Tomorrow’s Parties.
