What is an EFIN number?
An EFIN (Electronic Filing Identification Number) is the identifier the IRS uses for a firm that has completed the IRS e-file application and been approved as an authorized IRS e-file provider. You need an EFIN to electronically file returns as a tax professional/firm.
EFIN versus EIN
EFIN = IRS e-file program identifier for your e-file provider firm (used in e-filing context).
EIN = employer identification number for your business (used broadly for tax admin).
Where can I find my EFIN number?
For most tax firms, you’ll find the EFIN in one or more of these places:
IRS acceptance materials. Your IRS e-file acceptance letter will include the EFIN.
IRS e-Services / e-file application. View your existing e-file application details.
Your professional tax software settings. Many systems store the firm’s EFIN in admin/global/e-file setup — exact clicks vary by vendor.
If you suspect an EFIN problem such as compromise, inactivation, or application changes, the IRS recommends monitoring and protecting it and keeping application information current.
