Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

Steps to find your EFIN and application summary for e-filing tax returns.

Highlights

An EFIN (Electronic Filing Identification Number) is required by the IRS for authorized e-file providers to submit tax returns electronically.
You’ll find the EFIN in IRS acceptance materials, IRS e-Services/e-file application, and your professional tax software settings.
Step-by-step instructions are provided for accessing, printing, and submitting your EFIN application summary for Thomson Reuters UltraTax CS, ONESOURCE Income Tax, and GoSystem Tax RS.

What is an EFIN number?

An EFIN (Electronic Filing Identification Number) is the identifier the IRS uses for a firm that has completed the IRS e-file application and been approved as an authorized IRS e-file provider. You need an EFIN to electronically file returns as a tax professional/firm.

EFIN versus EIN

EFIN = IRS e-file program identifier for your e-file provider firm (used in e-filing context).
EIN = employer identification number for your business (used broadly for tax admin).

Where can I find my EFIN number?

For most tax firms, you’ll find the EFIN in one or more of these places:

IRS acceptance materials. Your IRS e-file acceptance letter will include the EFIN.
IRS e-Services / e-file application. View your existing e-file application details.
Your professional tax software settings. Many systems store the firm’s EFIN in admin/global/e-file setup — exact clicks vary by vendor.

If you suspect an EFIN problem such as compromise, inactivation, or application changes, the IRS recommends monitoring and protecting it and keeping application information current.

How to access your application summary

To access or print the application summary from IRS e-services, follow these steps:

Visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov/tax-professionals/e-file-provider-services
Select the Access e-file application link
Using the fields provided, enter your credentials through ID.me to log in to the IRS e-services site
On the Select Your Organization page, under Organization Roles, click Select next to your organizations’ name
Select View/Edit link
Select Print
Follow the steps below to submit the downloaded Application Summary to Thomson Reuters

How to verify your IRS e-file application summary for Thomson Reuters

If you haven’t already done so, you’ll need to provide a copy of your IRS e-file application summary before you can electronically file returns via Thomson Reuters UltraTax CS, ONESOURCE Income Tax and GoSystem Tax RS.

For UltraTax CS

If you attempt to e-file returns in UltraTax CS without verifying your e-file application summary, you’ll receive the following message:

“Your CS Connect electronic filing capability is disabled. Thomson Reuters requires preparers to submit a copy of their ‘Application Summary’ from E-Services prior to e-filing. Please send the application summary to [email protected] and include your firm ID (1234) in the subject line.”

If you’re unsure of your firm ID number, see find my firm ID.

IMPORTANT: If you have more than one EFIN number associated with your account, we’ll need an IRS e-file application summary for each EFIN number.

For ONESOURCE Income Tax and GoSystem Tax RS

If you attempt to e-file tax year 2025 returns in ONESOURCE Income Tax or GoSystem Tax RS without verifying your e-file application summary, you’ll receive the following diagnostic:

“EFIN entered is not valid for this account. You’ll need to provide a copy of the IRS e-file Application Summary from your IRS e-services account.”

In ONESOURCE Income Tax:

Select Tools , then Admin Tools , then EFIN Validation
On the EFIN Validation screen, complete all required fields and upload your EFIN Application Summary. Please ensure the document matches the information on file with the IRS for successful e-filing.

In GoSystem Tax RS:

·Select Admin, then EFIN Validation
On the EFIN Validation screen, complete all required fields and upload your EFIN Application Summary. Please ensure the document matches the information on file with the IRS for successful e-filing.
