A Jacksonville, Florida, judge was regretful for calling a woman an “entitled little snot” and making biased remarks in multiple cases, but his attorney says he’s still fit to be a judge in his correspondence with the state’s Judicial Qualifications Commission.
Circuit Judge Eric Roberson’s attorney addressed the commission in a July 11 letter, which concluded that the judge may have violated 11 parts of the state’s Code of Judicial Conduct. During one hearing between a woman and her father, the judge referred to the woman as “a terrible human being.” Court transcripts showed the judge said to the father, “God bless you for not beating the tar out of her. Because she was spared the rod, and good God is she spoiled,” according to coverage on Jacksonville.com.
In a different case, the panel concluded Roberson “made remarks and issued findings that conveyed bias … without legal or factual support.” The judge’s attorney, Scott Richardson, wrote a six-page letter on the judge’s behalf where the judge admitted to specific comments. Richardson noted that the 5th District Court of Appeal upheld Roberson’s rulings in two of the cases cited by the panel. He also said the judge did not violate 10 of the judicial canons cited by the panel.
