Step-by-Step Guide to Assembling an Emergency Go Bag
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

In light of the wildfires that LA County has been experiencing this past week, we thought it would be a good idea to share some helpful information on what you will want to consider packing to be better prepared for an emergency.

A go bag is an essential kit to have ready for emergencies where quick evacuation is necessary. Here’s a step-by-step guide to create a well-prepared and functional go bag:

Step 1: Choose the Right Bag

Select a sturdy, comfortable, and easy-to-carry backpack or duffel bag.
Ensure the bag is large enough to hold essentials but not so bulky it becomes hard to manage.

Step 2: Include the Essential Categories

Pack items into the following categories:

1. Personal Identification and Documentation

Copies of IDs (driver’s license, passport, etc.).
Copies of important documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificate, vaccination records.
Proof of address (utility bills, lease agreements).
Emergency contact information.
Copies of medical and homeowners’ insurance documents.
A copy of your estate planning documents (saved on a portable thumb drive is fine as long as your attorney has stored your original will in their fireproof safe and has an electronic copy of all of your signed documents).
A small amount of cash in small denominations.

2. Emergency Basics

Flashlight (with extra batteries or a crank model).
Multi-tool or Swiss Army knife.
Whistle for signaling.
Local maps (paper versions) with evacuation routes marked.

3. Food and Water

Water: At least 1 gallon per person per day (3-day supply for evacuation).
Water purification tablets or a small filtration system.
Non-perishable food: Energy bars, canned goods, dried fruit, or nuts (enough for at least 72 hours).
Manual can opener.

4. Clothing and Shelter

A change of clothes (weather-appropriate, including sturdy shoes).
Warm hat, gloves, and a rain poncho or lightweight rain jacket.
Emergency blanket or sleeping bag.
Compact tent or tarp (optional for prolonged outdoor stays).

5. First Aid and Hygiene

First aid kit (include bandages, antiseptics, pain relievers, and any prescribed medications).
Hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes.
Personal hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, small comb, soap).
Feminine hygiene products.

6. Communication and Tools

Battery-powered or hand-crank radio.
Fully charged power bank(s) for phones.
Charging cables and adapters.
Notebook and waterproof pen.

7. Safety and Self-Defense

N95 or surgical masks to protect from dust or contaminants.
Goggles or safety glasses.
Pepper spray or other self-defense tools (if legally allowed in your area).

8. Items for Special Needs

For children: Baby formula, diapers, wipes, small toys.
For pets: Leash, food, collapsible water bowl, medication, waste bags.
Prescription medications or medical devices (e.g., inhalers, insulin, epipens).

Step 3: Customize Your Go Bag

Consider the specific needs of your household, such as dietary restrictions, mobility aids, or specific medical requirements.
Include items that provide comfort (e.g., a family photo, small book, or favorite snacks).

Step 4: Pack Strategically

Use waterproof bags or Ziplocs to keep items dry.
Label compartments for quick access.
Place frequently needed items (like a flashlight) in easily accessible pockets.

Step 5: Maintain and Update the Bag

Check your bag every 6 months. Replace expired food, water, and medications.
Update personal documents and clothing for seasonal changes.

Step 6: Plan for Storage

Keep your go bag in an easily accessible location near an exit (e.g., in a closet by the front door or in your car trunk).
Inform all household members about the location and contents of the bag.

Step 7: Create a Family Plan

Establish an emergency communication plan with your family.
Practice evacuation routes and designate a meeting spot.

By following these steps and keeping your go bag ready, you’ll be prepared to leave quickly and safely in case of an emergency.

You may want to consider scanning important family photos, videos and mementos to a flash drive or cloud service.  There are several companies that provide this service.

Now that we are in the new year, if you, a friend or family member need help updating your estate plan, please reach out to Katie in our Intake Department at (760) 448-2220 or at https://www.geigerlawoffice.com/contact.cfm.
