Have You Completed Your Year-End Financial Checklist?
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

As the holidays sweep in, many of us find ourselves juggling family time, travel, and loose ends we meant to tie up weeks ago. Even with all that happening, these last days before January 1 offer a simple chance to give your family more peace of mind. Estate planning isn’t just another task. It’s a quiet way to look out for the people you care about. And as a North Carolina firm, we understand how local rules guide year end decisions for many families.

Here’s a quick checklist to help you head into the new year feeling more settled.

4 Critical Steps Before January 1

1. Update Beneficiary Designations

What to check: Accounts that pass outside your Will, including

401(k)IRALife insurancePay on death or transfer on death accounts

Why it matters: Whoever is listed on the form usually receives the asset, even if your Will says something different.

When to act: If this year brought marriage, divorce, or a new child, updating these forms is especially important.

2. Review Your Will and Trust Documents

What to look for:

Are your chosen Guardians still the people you trustAre your Executor or Trustee choices still the right fit

Plans written long ago sometimes fall out of step with how life has changed. A quick read can help you spot small issues before they turn into real problems later.

3. Fund Your Living Trust

A Revocable Living Trust only works as intended if assets have been moved into it. Think of it as a container that needs items placed inside.

Check that

Real estate has been retitledLarger bank accounts reflect the TrustInvestment accounts were updated correctly

If assets never made it in, your estate may still pass through court, slowing things down and reducing the privacy many families want.

4. Consider Year End Gifts

Many families choose to give financial gifts before the year closes. It can reduce the size of a taxable estate and help loved ones now instead of later. Even small gifts add up over time and often make a meaningful impact.

Why This Review Matters

We often hear “I set everything up years ago, it should be fine.” Plans aren’t meant to sit untouched forever. Life changes, relationships shift, and goals evolve. Estate planning works best when it reflects your world as it looks today.

Our firm works with families throughout North Carolina, and we understand how local courts and state level rules shape the choices people make. Templates or online forms miss that personal layer of guidance.

Book Your Peace of Mind Consultation

As the year wraps up, give yourself a moment to make sure your plan still fits your life. If any point above raised a question, even a small one, reach out. A brief review can bring real comfort heading into the new year.

Contact the Trusts and Estates Law Group today to schedule a confidential consultation and take the next step in securing your family’s future.
