Box Unveils AI-Powered Security Suite Targeting Legal, Finance, Government and Other Industries

At its annual BoxWorks conference in San Francisco today, Box announced the launch of Box Shield Pro, an enhanced suite of AI-powered security capabilities designed to address the evolving cybersecurity needs of law firms, financial services firms, healthcare organizations, government agencies, and others.

The new offering builds on Box’s existing Shield security platform by adding three AI-driven features: an AI Classification Agent for automated content categorization, an AI Threat Analysis Agent for streamlined security alerts, and ransomware detection capabilities that monitor for mass encryption activities across the Box platform.

For law firms, the enhanced platform offers specific functionality around management of privileged legal documents. The AI Classification Agent can automatically categorize legal documents based on content analysis and organizational requirements, while the AI Threat Analysis Agent provides summarized threat alerts to help security teams respond more efficiently to suspicious file activity.

Among legal organizations using Box for its documents is the Santa Barbara County Office of the Public Defender, which said in a statement provided by Box that protecting privileged client data while maintaining seamless collaboration is essential for its legal operations.

“[Box] helps us proactively safeguard sensitive content without disrupting the way our legal teams work,” said Deepak Budwani, the office’s chief financial and administrative officer. “We’re excited to see how new capabilities will further strengthen our ability to meet these responsibilities.”

AI Security Agents

To help safeguard data and accelerate incident response, Box Shield Pro employs new AI-powered security agents. These agents include:

The AI Classification Agent, which uses intelligent content analysis to automatically classify sensitive content based on detected patterns, file context and organizational requirements.
The AI Threat Analysis Agent, which simplifies threat alerts by automatically generating concise summaries within each notification, helping security teams respond more quickly and effectively.
Ransomware Activity Detection, which proactively safeguards Box Drive and the rest of the Box platform by detecting mass encryption of content, promptly alerting security teams of the suspicious activity, and providing rapid remediation options.

The announcement comes as legal and other professional services organizations increasingly adopt AI tools for content workflows, creating new security considerations around systems that automatically classify, analyze, and make decisions about confidential information. Box says its approach embeds security controls within these AI operations rather than applying them as an overlay.

Box originally launched its Shield security platform in 2019, gradually expanding it with features like malware scanning and behavioral anomaly detection. The company positions Shield Pro as an evolution of this foundation for the AI era.

Box Shield Pro will be available as an add-on for current Box Shield, Enterprise Plus, and Enterprise Advanced customers later this year. Specific pricing details were not disclosed in the announcement.
