What It Means for Your Disability Benefits – Disability Attorneys of Michigan

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2026, providing a welcome increase in monthly benefits for millions of Americans who rely on Social Security Disability (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). This annual increase helps ensure that benefits keep pace with inflation and the rising cost of everyday essentials, which is a significant adjustment for those living on fixed incomes.

How Much Will Benefits Increase?

Beginning in January 2026, nearly 71 million Social Security disability benefits recipients will see a 2.8% increase in their monthly payments. On average, that means retirees will receive about $56 more per month. This increase will take effect on December 31, 2025, and recipients will receive a notification regarding their benefit amount from the SSA in early December.

What Is COLA?

The COLA is designed to help beneficiaries maintain their purchasing power as prices rise. Each year, the SSA calculates the adjustment based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), as determined by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Over the past decade, the average COLA has been about 3.1%, with the 2025 increase set at 2.5%.

How to View Your New Benefit Amount

The SSA will begin notifying beneficiaries of their updated 2026 benefit amounts in early December. Those with a mySocialSecurity account can access their COLA notice online, which is a faster, more secure option than waiting for a paper notice in the mail.

To view your notice digitally, you must have your online account set up by November 19th, 2025.

How Will Medicare Coverage Be Affected?

Information on Medicare changes for 2026 will be posted on the official Medicare site. For beneficiaries enrolled in both Social Security and Medicare, updates to your benefit amount (reflecting any changes to Medicare premiums) will also appear in your mySocialSecurity Message Center starting in late November.

Supporting Michigan Residents Through Every Step

At Disability Attorneys of Michigan, we know how vital Social Security Disability and SSI benefits are for individuals and families across our state. Annual COLA increases can make a meaningful difference, but the benefits system is still confusing and complex to many.

If you have questions about your disability benefits, our team is here to help. We’ve dedicated our practice to helping Michigan residents secure the benefits they deserve and navigate the Social Security Disability approval process by their side.

Contact us today by submitting an online form or calling our office at (800) 949-2900 for a free case evaluation.
