Understanding depression to get the right care

In our busy lives, it can be hard to find some quiet time to check in and ask yourself how you are really feeling. Even if you are managing your to-do list and getting things done, you might sense that something is missing – that maybe your “spark” isn’t as bright as you think it could be.

If it’s been a while since you felt joyful or energetic, you are not alone. Nearly one in five Americans has experienced depression. The good news is, with the right support, you can feel better.

What is depression?

Depression is a common but serious mental health condition. It is an overwhelming sadness lasting at least two weeks and is often accompanied by a lack of interest in things you used to enjoy.

Depression can affect your relationships, job, and physical health. People of all backgrounds and ages can experience depression, even young children.

While there is no single cause of depression, traumatic events, chronic diseases, loss of a loved one, financial instability, substance use, and a family history of depression can increase your risk.

Know the signs

Prolonged sadness is the most common sign of depression, but other behaviors associated with depression include:

Sleeping too much or too little
Changes in appetite
Trouble concentrating or making decisions
Fatigue
Feeling hopeless or worthless
Physical aches and pains
Suicidal thoughts

Depression can usually be managed through a combination of therapy, self-care practices, and medication. A therapist can also help you develop coping strategies for extra support.
