Are Banks And Credit Unions Open On Columbus Day 2025?

Monday, October 13, 2025, is Columbus Day (also recognized as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in many parts of the country). Anytime a federal holiday rolls around, it’s natural to wonder which places will be open or closed—especially when it comes to banks and credit unions. Although not everyone observes the holiday, many institutions and schools close in recognition. So, are banks open on Columbus Day?

Are Banks Open on Columbus Day?

No, most banks will be closed on Columbus Day 2025.

Columbus Day is a federal holiday, which means that federal government offices, including the Federal Reserve, are closed. Because banks rely on the Federal Reserve for payment processing, wire transfers, and clearing checks, nearly all major banks suspend operations for the day.

This includes branches of:

Bank of America
Chase
Wells Fargo
Citibank
U.S. Bank
PNC Bank
Truist
Regions Bank

However, there are some exceptions. Banks that operate inside grocery stores or retail locations—such as certain TD Bank or Capital One Café branches—may remain open with modified hours. These exceptions vary by region, so it’s best to check your local branch before heading out.

Are Credit Unions Open on Columbus Day?

No, most credit unions will also be closed on Columbus Day 2025.

Credit unions generally follow the same holiday schedule as banks since they also depend on the Federal Reserve system. That means services such as deposits, check clearing, and loan processing will be delayed until the next business day.

Some community-based credit unions or smaller regional ones may offer limited hours or drive-thru access. To be sure, check your credit union’s website or call ahead before visiting on Monday, October 13.

What Banking Services Are Still Available?

Even though physical bank branches and credit unions are closed, you’ll still have access to most essential services through digital and self-service options, including:

ATMs: You can withdraw cash, deposit checks, and check balances as usual.
Online and Mobile Banking: Most digital banking services remain fully functional, allowing you to pay bills, transfer funds, or monitor account activity.
Customer Service Chatbots: Many banks now offer automated virtual assistance, even when live representatives are unavailable.

Just keep in mind that transactions made on a federal holiday—like check deposits or transfers—may not post until Tuesday, October 14, 2025.

Weekend and Holiday Banking Schedule

If you need to handle in-person banking around Columbus Day, here’s how the long weekend typically plays out:

Saturday, October 11: Most bank branches open with regular or reduced Saturday hours.
Sunday, October 12: Most banks and credit unions closed (except select in-store branches).
Monday, October 13 (Columbus Day): Banks and credit unions closed nationwide.
Tuesday, October 14: Normal banking operations resume.

Planning ahead will help you avoid delays—especially if you need to make payments, deposit checks, or transfer funds over the long weekend.

You’re Out of Luck For Bank Business on Monday

If you’re wondering, “Are banks and credit unions open on Columbus Day 2025?”, the answer is no for nearly all locations. Both banks and credit unions observe the holiday as a federal closure, though digital banking tools will still be available.

To avoid interruptions, take care of time-sensitive transactions before Saturday, October 11, or be prepared to wait until Tuesday, October 14, when operations resume.
