5 Phone Settings to Turn On Today to Reduce Spam Calls

We all get them: calls labeled as “potential spam” or “unknown caller.” Sometimes dozens of them a day. It is frustrating, and they’re only getting more aggressive. At the end of the day, these calls are designed to trick you into answering. But you can protect yourself by adjusting a few of your phone settings. Most people never explore these settings, which means they’re missing out on simple protections that make a big difference. That said, here are five phone settings to turn on today to reduce the number of spam calls you receive.

1. Silence Unknown Callers (iPhone)

Silence Unknown Callers is one of the most effective tools Apple offers to reduce spam calls. When this setting is turned on, calls from numbers not in your contacts go straight to voicemail without ever ringing your phone. This stops scammers from interrupting your day and reduces the temptation to answer suspicious calls. You can still review missed calls later, but you won’t be bothered in real time. For anyone overwhelmed by constant interruptions, this setting is a powerful way to reduce spam calls instantly.

2. Enable Scam and Spam Protection (Android & Samsung)

Android and Samsung phones include built‑in spam protection that identifies suspicious calls before you answer. When enabled, your phone will display warnings like “Spam Risk” or “Scam Likely,” helping you avoid dangerous or annoying calls. These systems use constantly updated databases to flag known scam numbers. Turning this feature on is one of the easiest ways to reduce spam calls without installing third‑party apps. With just a quick toggle, your phone becomes much smarter about screening unwanted callers.

3. Turn On Call Blocking & Identification Apps

Both iPhone and Android allow you to enable call‑blocking apps that work alongside your phone’s built‑in protections. Apps like Hiya, Truecaller, and your carrier’s own tools can identify spoofed numbers and block them automatically. These apps maintain massive databases of known scam callers, updating them in real time. When activated, they filter out high‑risk calls before they reach you. Combining these apps with your phone’s native settings gives you a strong, layered defense to reduce spam calls.

4. Activate Do Not Disturb With Allowed Contacts Only

Do Not Disturb isn’t just for quiet time. By customizing the feature to allow calls only from your contacts or favorites, you eliminate nearly all unwanted interruptions. This setting ensures that important calls still come through while blocking everything else. It’s especially useful during work hours, family time, or while sleeping. With a few adjustments, Do Not Disturb becomes a smart filter that helps you reduce spam calls without missing anything important.

5. Block Unknown or Private Numbers

Many spam callers hide behind private or restricted numbers to avoid detection. Both iPhone and Android allow you to block these types of calls entirely. When this setting is turned on, your phone automatically rejects calls that don’t display a number. This is one of the most effective ways to reduce spam calls from scammers who intentionally mask their identity. If you rarely receive legitimate private calls, this setting can dramatically cut down on unwanted interruptions.

Why These Settings Make a Big Difference

The reason these tools work so well is that most spam callers rely on volume and speed. They dial thousands of numbers hoping a few people will answer, and when your phone stops ringing, you’re no longer an easy target. Each of these settings creates a barrier that makes your number less valuable to scammers. When used together, they significantly reduce spam calls and give you more control over who reaches you.
