3 Grocery Store Chains That Offer the Best Senior Discounts in 2026

The average household in the United States spends roughly $550 per month on groceries, though that figure varies widely, depending on the size of the family and location. For seniors on a fixed income, even $550 each month can feel crippling. However, there are several grocery chains out there that strive to help seniors save money, and it can really help your money go further. Here are three chains that offer the best discounts right now.

1. Harris Teeter Offers Weekly Senior Savings

One of the most reliable grocery senior discounts comes from Harris Teeter through its “Club 60” program. Shoppers aged 60 and older can receive 5% off groceries every Thursday, making it one of the few weekly senior discount opportunities in the grocery industry. The discount typically excludes items such as fuel, gift cards, alcohol, and pharmacy purchases, but it still applies to most everyday groceries.

Because it happens weekly rather than monthly, retirees can plan their grocery trips around the savings day. For seniors who live near a Harris Teeter store, this steady discount can lead to meaningful savings throughout the year.

2. Safeway Hosts Monthly Senior Discount Days

Safeway continues to be another solid option for senior grocery savings in many regions. Participating stores offer about 10% off groceries on the first Wednesday of the month for customers aged 62 and older. The discount usually requires a loyalty card or store app account to activate the savings.

Although the promotion only happens once a month, savvy shoppers often plan larger grocery runs to maximize the discount. Combining the senior discount with digital coupons and loyalty rewards can increase the total savings even more.

3. Fred Meyer Gives Seniors 10% Off Monthly

Fred Meyer, a supermarket chain owned by Kroger and popular in the Pacific Northwest, also offers strong senior savings opportunities. Shoppers aged 55 and older can receive 10% off select merchandise on the first Tuesday of every month. The savings apply primarily to store-brand groceries and many household items.

While certain departments like alcohol and tobacco are excluded, the discount still covers thousands of products. For retirees who regularly buy store-brand goods, this monthly promotion can produce noticeable grocery savings.

How to Maximize Senior Grocery Savings

Senior discounts have become rarer. A lot of chains have axed their senior savings programs, phasing them out for loyalty programs and digital coupons. Although these “new” programs are still decent, some of them may be less accessible to older Americans who are less tech-savvy.  Other chains have replaced senior days with broader promotions that apply to all shoppers, not just retirees. It has certainly made it harder for some seniors to get the straightforward savings they are looking for.

That said, there are some other ways to maximize your savings at the grocery store. Here’s what you can do…

Combine multiple strategies to save the most money. For example, pairing senior discount days with store loyalty programs, digital coupons, or weekly sales.
Plan a larger grocery trip on the designated discount days to max your savings.
Stack coupons (when allowed) on top of the senior discount.

The Smart Shopper’s Approach to Senior Discounts

Senior grocery discounts may not be as widespread as they once were, but they still provide valuable opportunities for retirees to save money. Chains like Harris Teeter, Safeway, and Fred Meyer continue to offer dedicated savings days that reward older shoppers. These programs may seem small (often 5% to 10%), but over time, the savings can add up quickly. The key is knowing when the discounts occur and planning your shopping trips accordingly. For retirees looking to protect their budgets, a little strategy can turn routine grocery shopping into a reliable source of savings.
