Memorial Day has arrived, and whether you’re looking to grab some last-minute refreshments and snacks for a gathering or grab a bite to eat, consumers will have plenty of shopping and dining options on Monday.

Most national retailers, grocery stores and restaurant chains will be open on Memorial Day, however banks and post offices will be closed. The stock market will also be closed since Memorial Day is a federal holiday.

This year, Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 25. The holiday is the “nation’s foremost annual day to mourn and honor its deceased service men and women,” according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The holiday, originally called “Decoration Day,” dates back to the 1860s and commemorates those who have died while serving in the U.S. military.

Here’s everything you need to know about what’s open and closed on Memorial Day. It’s best to check with your local store or restaurant online before leaving home, as hours and closures can vary by location.

When Is Memorial Day 2026?

Memorial Day always falls on the last Monday of May. This year, Memorial Day is May 25.

Are Banks, Post Offices, UPS and FedEx Open on Memorial Day?

Memorial Day is a USPS holiday, according to the agency’s website, meaning mail will not be delivered and post offices will be closed for retail transactions on May 25.
UPS and FedEx pickup and delivery services will not be available on Memorial Day. UPS Store locations may be closed, according to the company’s website, and FedEx Office hours will also be modified.
Since it is a federal holiday, most bank branches will be closed on May 25. Consumers should check with their local bank branch for specific holiday hours.

Is the Stock Market Open on Memorial Day?

United States stock markets will be closed on Monday, May 25, in observance of Memorial Day.

The Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange will be closed Monday and reopen Tuesday, May 26. The U.S. bond market closed early at 2 p.m. ET on Friday, May 22, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, and will remain closed on Memorial Day.

Are Grocery Stores Open on Memorial Day?

Most grocery chains will be open under their regular operating hours on May 25. Kroger says on its website that its stores will be open regular hours; however, pharmacy and clinic hours may vary.

Walmart and Food Lion confirmed to USA TODAY their stores will be open regular hours on the holiday as well.

Other grocery stores, such as Trader Joe’s, Meijer, Publix and Whole Foods, among others, have traditionally been open on Memorial Day. It is always best to check with your local store regarding specific holiday hours.

In terms of wholesale clubs, Sam’s Club warehouses will open at 8 a.m. for Plus members and 9 a.m. for Club members, and will close at 8 p.m., according to the company’s website. BJ’s warehouses will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Memorial Day, the company says on its website.

Costco warehouses will be closed on Memorial Day, according to the company’s website.

Are Restaurants Open on Memorial Day?

Most restaurant chains will remain open on Memorial Day, including McDonald’s, Starbucks, Chipotle, Chick-fil-A, Dunkin and Wendy’s, among others.

It is always best to check on the company’s app or with your nearest location for their specific holiday hours.

Are Retail Stores Open on Memorial Day?

Yes, most national retailers will remain open on May 25, including Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy, IKEA, Target, TJ Maxx and Bass Pro Shop, among others.

It is always best to check on the company’s app or with your nearest location for their specific holiday hours.
