A New York-based electronics manufacturer is recalling thousands of its dumbbells, and not because they’re too heavy.
Tzumi Electronics issued the recall for about 50,000 units of its FitRx SmartBell Quick-Select 5-52.5-pound Adjustable Dumbbells after multiple reports of weight plates detaching during use, posing a risk of serious injury.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall April 23, covering select model 8361 FitRx SmartBell adjustable dumbbells sold nationwide.
Here’s what to know about the recalled dumbbells.
What Products Are Affected?
The recall applies to FitRx SmartBell Quick-Select Adjustable Dumbbells, with serial numbers KK23288361 through KK23388361 and KK207608361 through KK21347836.
The dumbbells were sold in black with red accents and came with handles, removable weight plates and a molded plastic storage tray. Users can adjust the weight from 5 pounds to 52.5 pounds in 2.5- or 5-pound increments by turning the handle while the dumbbell is placed in the tray.
The model and serial numbers can be found on the side of the storage tray. “FitRx” is printed on both the tray and the dumbbell handles, according to the CPSC.
Why Are the Dumbbells Being Recalled?
According to the CPSC, weight plates can dislodge from the handle during use and strike users or bystanders.
There have been more than 115 reports of weight plates detaching. At least six injuries have been reported, including broken toes, bruises, contusions and lacerations, the agency said.
Where Were the Dumbbells Sold?
The recalled dumbbells were sold at Walmart stores nationwide and online at Walmart.com from January 2024 through November 2024 for about $100.
What Should Consumers Do Now?
Customers should immediately stop using the recalled dumbbells and contact Tzumi Electronics for a free replacement dumbbell and tray.
Customers are instructed to write the word “Recalled” across the dumbbell tray using a permanent marker or spray paint, register the product through the company’s recall website and dispose of the product after registration is confirmed.
