Cboe Global Markets plunged 7.7% on Tuesday as Leverage Shares by Themes announced another wave of expansion in its leveraged single stock ETF lineup, adding eight more underlying securities to its product roster including AXTI, APH, TEL, FN, KEYS, ADI, MCHP, and TSEM.

The catalyst appears tied to competitive pressure in the exchange-traded products space. While Cboe operates one of the largest options exchanges and has been a major beneficiary of ETF growth through listing fees and derivatives trading, the continued proliferation of leveraged single-stock ETFs by third-party providers like Leverage Shares signals intensifying competition in structured product offerings. These products create trading activity but may also fragment market share across venues and reduce the pricing power of incumbent exchanges. The news suggests product innovation is accelerating outside traditional exchange-controlled offerings, potentially pressuring Cboe’s revenue mix in its derivatives and proprietary product segments.

Trading volume reached 676,818 shares on Tuesday, reflecting heightened activity as investors absorbed the implications for the exchange operator’s competitive positioning. Cboe’s market capitalization now stands at $28.3 billion following the decline to $270.48 per share. The financial data and stock exchanges operator has been navigating a complex environment where technological innovation and new entrants are reshaping how derivatives products reach the market.

The selloff underscores investor sensitivity to threats against Cboe’s market position. Exchange operators derive significant revenue from proprietary index licensing, options trading, and data services tied to ETF activity. As specialized firms continue launching niche products that drive trading volume to multiple venues, Cboe faces questions about whether it can maintain its dominance in derivatives innovation or whether the moat around its franchise is narrowing.

What to Watch: Investors should monitor Cboe’s next earnings report for commentary on competitive dynamics in ETF listings and whether the company plans strategic responses to the wave of specialized leveraged products entering the market. Any updates on proprietary product launches or partnerships will be key to assessing whether the exchange can defend its market share.
