5 of Our Favorite Things to Buy at Walmart (Time and Time Again)

There is a reason the parking lot is always full. Whether you love the low prices or just tolerate the crowds to get them, Walmart remains a cornerstone of the American budget.

We recently asked Money Talks News readers to share the specific items they buy at Walmart faithfully — the products that end up in the cart every single week because the value is simply unbeatable. The results weren’t just about saving pennies, they were about strategic shopping.

Readers told us exactly where they save the most money, and the consensus is clear: It’s not about buying everything at Walmart. It’s about buying the right things there.

Here are the types of products MTN readers refuse to buy anywhere else.

1. Store-brand pantry staples

If there is one hill our readers are willing to die on, it is the quality-to-price ratio of the Great Value brand. While some store brands have a reputation for tasting generic, readers told us that Walmart’s pantry staples have become indistinguishable from the national brands.

The most frequent mentions were canned goods, spices, and baking supplies. The savings on these small items adds up significantly over the course of a year.

“Walmart brands are cheaper and just as good quality-wise as the name brands,” reader Peggy A. told us about her regular purchases of frozen breakfast items.

Others were even more specific about where the store brand wins.

Chris M. noted that for frozen biscuits, the Great Value brand is “cheaper and better than Pillsbury.”

The math supports this emotional shift. Basic staples like flour, sugar, and spices often come from the same distribution facilities as their name-brand counterparts. You aren’t paying for better quality, you’re paying for the marketing budget of a famous logo.

Joni T. summed it up perfectly when buying sugar-free creamer: “Reasonably priced, good taste and scents.”

2. Health and personal care essentials

The pharmacy aisle is where Walmart’s Equate brand shines. Strict federal regulations ensure that generic medications must have the same active ingredients at the same strength and dosage as the brand-name versions.

Money Talks News readers know this, and you aren’t willing to pay a premium for a fancy box.

From ibuprofen to allergy relief, readers consistently cited the pharmacy as a major source of savings.

Faith B. explained that buying personal products like shampoo and toothpaste at Walmart is a key part of her financial strategy.

“It helps my budget when I shop here and the products are the same you find everywhere else,” she said.

It’s not just about generics, though.

Pam B. noted that for specific needs like incontinence underwear, Walmart is the “only one who carries my preferred brand.”

Whether it’s for the price or the selection, the health and beauty aisles remain a top draw.

Mary P. highlighted the convenience factor for her toiletries and OTC meds: “Price and convenience. Store is one mile away. Can go into the store or do order pickup.”

3. Cleaning and household supplies

You don’t need a warehouse club membership to get bulk pricing on paper towels and toilet paper. Many of you pointed out that Walmart offers competitive pricing on cleaning supplies without the annual fee of a Costco or Sam’s Club.

This category is a favorite because it is non-perishable. You can stock up when the price is right without worrying about spoilage.

Shan H. specifically mentioned cleaning products as a go-to purchase.

“Cheaper products and … more of a selection to choose from than my local grocery store,” she explained.

For many readers, it comes down to a simple calculation of selection versus cost. You can find the specific brand of detergent or cleaner you trust, but often at a price point that beats the local supermarket.

4. Fresh meat and produce

While some shoppers are skeptical of big-box produce, our readers were quick to defend the quality of Walmart’s fresh food sections.

Despite rising food costs across the board, the meat and produce sections draw you into the store.

Robert D. pointed to chicken and fish as consistent purchases due to the “good price.”

Ann R. offered a specific tip for those who might skip the green aisles.

“The produce is great here,” she said. “Fuji apples, avocados, scallions and squashes are especially good.”

For others, like Gloria M., the consistency is what matters most. She noted that Walmart’s prices beat even the so-called lower-priced major chain supermarkets, allowing her to “stretch my grocery dollars and fill my basket to feed my family.”

5. Pet food and supplies

Pet ownership is one of the most rewarding parts of life, but it isn’t cheap. You told us that Walmart is your preferred destination for keeping your furry friends fed and happy without breaking the bank.

Readers consistently cited the pet aisle for its combination of variety and value.

Claudia A. listed cat food and treats as staples in her cart simply because of the “cheaper prices.”

It’s not just about the cheapest bag on the shelf, either. Dan P. emphasized that he shops there for dog food because of the “selection and price.”
