VC Chamath Palihapitiya Warns Non-State Actors Will Leverage Quantum Computing to Attack Bitcoin’s ‘Honeypot’ – Crypto News Bitcoin News

Key Takeaways:

On the All-In podcast, Chamath Palihapitiya stated the quantum threat to Bitcoin had accelerated from 25 to 7 years.

Palihapitiya states Bitcoin will be the 1st honeypot hackers drain to send prices crashing to 0.

To survive, the Bitcoin network faces a 5 to 7-year deadline to migrate and redesign nodes and wallets.

Chamath Palihapitiya Warns Bitcoin Would Be Targeted by Non-State Actors Leveraging Quantum Supremacy

The issue of quantum computing cracking cryptocurrencies became a mainstream subject, with experts and investors offering their opinions on the problem.

On the All-In podcast, venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya declared that the expected appearance of a quantum chip capable of breaking bitcoin has accelerated from 25 years to 7 years at most.

Taking this into account, Palihapitiya advised the leaders of the Bitcoin ecosystem to organize and move to shield bitcoin from this menace or risk becoming an obvious honeypot.

While he acknowledged that all encryption-based systems, including banking and financial institutions, would be at risk in the event of a quantum computer powerful enough to break encryption, he highlighted that crypto and bitcoin would be the first targets.

He stressed:

“A non-state actor’s incentive will first be to drain the obvious honeypots and then tell everybody that it’s broken, so that then everything goes to sh*t, all the prices go to zero, and then they have all the money, and then they can buy stuff.”

While recent reports are propping up the upcoming rise of these computers, reducing the processing power these would need to achieve quantum supremacy over encryption, the bitcoin community is still debating implementing measures to protect its encryption system from hypothetical quantum attacks.

Palihapitiya acknowledged the complex migration that would follow these anti-quantum measures, including a wallet redesign that would affect transactional flows and processing nodes.

“These are complicated things that need to happen. And I would just tell the crypto community, you have 5 to seven years to get your sh*t in order,” he concluded.

But not all in the community share the same views, with some even discarding these warnings and believing that quantum computing is not a near-term threat for bitcoiners to worry about.
