Donald Trump’s crypto czar David Sacks says the US could add more Bitcoin to its strategic crypto reserve, as Japan-based Metaplanet ramps up its BTC buying spree.

Speaking at a fireside chat with Gemini co-founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas yesterday, Sacks said the US government can acquire more BTC as long as it is done in a “budget-neutral” way.

Path For US Government To Buy More Bitcoin Does Exist, But Will Need Approval

Sacks said he “can’t promise anything,” but a pathway for the government to buy more Bitcoin does already exist. The main challenge, according to him, is getting US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on board with the idea.

“The question is, can we get either the Treasury Department or the Commerce Department to get excited about that because if they do and they can figure out how to fund it, they actually do have presidential authorization,” Sacks said.

That’s after Trump signed an executive order on March 6 authorizing the creation of a US crypto reserve using any Bitcoin seized as part of criminal or civil asset forfeiture. Sacks added that the executive order “allows the government to purchase more” crypto, as long as the purchase does not add to the country’s debt or require additional taxes.

Metaplanet’s announcement follows the firm’s recent purchase of 1,004 Bitcoin for around $104.3 million on May 19.

The company is currently the eleventh largest corporate Bitcoin holder globally, with its reserves standing at 7,800 BTC. Metaplanet is also the largest Asia-based corporate holder of Bitcoin.
