Germany’s military placed an order with Rheinmetall (OTCPK:RNMBF) (OTCPK:RNMBY) for as many as 123 infantry heavy weapon carriers valued at about €2.7 billion euros ($2.9 billion). Deliveries of the “Schwerer Waffentraeger Infanterie” will start next year. The order includes service and maintenance on the vehicles, Rheinmetall said in a statement Thursday.

The carriers are replacements for the Wiesel tracked vehicle, which provides tactical fire support for infantry units. The new vehicles also will be part of the Bundeswehr’s new “medium force” category that can rapidly deploy over long distances, said the company. Germany and NATO allies boosted spending on defense after Russia invaded Ukraine two years ago.
