Shell (NYSE:SHEL) said Friday that Nigeria has “unconditionally” withdrawn $1.1B in civil claims against it relating to allegations of corruption in a 2011 oilfield deal, ending all related legal cases against the company in Italian courts.
The country’s Ministry of Justice has ended legal proceedings before Italy’s highest court related to the so-called OPL 245 oil block, Shell (SHEL) said, a day after Eni (NYSE:E) said the claims against it were withdrawn.
Shell (SHEL), Eni (E) and their former and current employees were acquitted in a criminal case in Milan last year; they had denied accusations of knowing that much of the $1.1B paid to acquire the license would be paid out in bribes.
Operations at OPL 245 have been stopped for more than a decade amid the ongoing legal claims.
