Minneapolis, Minnesota-based Target Corporation (TGT) is a general merchandise retailer. Valued at a market cap of $42.3 billion, the company operates a nationwide chain of stores and an expanding digital platform, offering a wide assortment of products across categories such as apparel, home goods, groceries, beauty, and electronics.
Companies worth $10 billion or more are typically classified as “large-cap stocks,” and TGT fits the label perfectly. The company’s strength lies in its strong brand reputation, broad product assortment, and ability to balance affordability with style through its “cheap chic” positioning. With its robust supply chain, same-day delivery services, and focus on customer convenience, Target stands out as a trusted one-stop retailer for everyday essentials and lifestyle products.
This general merchandise retailer’s stock has slipped 42.3% from its 52-week high of $161.50. Moreover, shares of TGT have declined marginally over the past three months, considerably underperforming the SPDR S&P Retail ETF’s (XRT) 12.6% surge during the same time frame.
In the longer term, TGT stock has fallen 38.7% over the past 52 weeks, significantly lagging behind XRT’s 18.4% uptick over the same time period. Moreover, on a YTD basis, shares of TGT are down 31.1%, compared to XRT’s 9.8% return.
To confirm its bearish trend, TGT has been trading below its 200-day moving average since mid-November last year, and has remained below its 50-day moving average since mid-August.
On Aug. 20, shares of TGT tumbled 6.3% after its mixed Q2 2025 earnings release. While the company’s revenue declined marginally year-over-year to $25.2 billion, it exceeded the consensus estimates by 1.2%. However, its adjusted EPS of $2.05 dropped 20.2% from the year-ago quarter and fell short of the analyst expectations by 1.9%, which might have lowered investor confidence.
TGT’s underperformance looks pronounced when compared to its rival, Walmart Inc. (WMT), which surged 30.6% over the past 52 weeks and 11.3% on a YTD basis.
Given TGT’s underperformance, analysts remain cautious about its prospects. The stock has a consensus rating of “Hold” from the 35 analysts covering it, and the mean price target of $107.29 suggests a 15.2% premium to its current price levels.
