The consumer confidence indicator in the Euro Area was confirmed at -16 in August 2023, down from -15.1 in July, which was the highest reading since February 2022.
It was the first decline in sentiment since September last year.
Consumer confidence in the European Union also worsened (-17 vs -16.1 in July), as survey respondents got more pessimistic about their household’s future financial situation and the expected general economic situation in their country.
Consumers’ intentions to make major purchases, as well as the assessments of their past financial situation remained broadly unchanged.
