Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) Web Services will invest about ¥2.3 trillion ($15.53 billion) in Japan through 2027 to increase its data centers, key for AI services, in the country’s two largest urban areas Tokyo and Osaka, Nikkei reported on Friday. The development comes on the heels of its prior investment of ¥1.51 trillion yen during 2011-2022 to build up cloud capacity in Japan. The cloud computing giant already provides generative AI services to major Japanese clients including Asahi Group, Marubeni and Nomura. The investment will surpass AWS’ planned investment of $12.7 billion in India.
