5 Things to Know About the Chevron Credit Card
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

Chevron and Texaco have the same co-branded gas credit card thanks to a 2001 merger that united the two companies. Issued by Synchrony Bank, the Techron Advantage credit card earns rewards at both Chevron and Texaco gas stations. Unfortunately, the card’s baseline rewards are fairly stingy considering that the average price of a gallon of gas hovering just below $3 (as of February 2026).

There are ways to increase your per-gallon savings with the card, but they require more spending on your part and a commitment to get gas mostly from Chevron and Texaco.

Here’s what to know about the Techron Advantage credit cards.

1. There are two Techron credit cards

When you apply for the Techron credit card, your application will be considered for one of two products:

The Techron Advantage credit card: A closed-loop card, meaning it can only be used at Chevron and Texaco gas stations in the U.S., plus eligible auto merchants who partner with Synchrony Car Care.

The Techron Advantage Visa credit card. An open-loop card, meaning it can be used anywhere Visa is accepted.

If you’re aren’t approved for the Techron Advantage Visa, you’ll be evaluated for the closed-loop version instead.

Both cards have a $0 annual fee.

2. Gas discounts are measly unless you spend enough

Both Techron cards earn a base discount of 3 cents per gallon of gas. If you have the Techron Advantage Visa, you can get an additional 10 cents off per gallon by spending more with the card. This discount, which Synchrony Bank calls a “Visa Spend Fuel Discount,” stacks on top of the 3 cents-per-gallon discount:

If you spend $100-$199.99 per billing period, you’ll get an additional 2 cents-per-gallon discount.

If you spend $200-$299.99 per billing period, you’ll get an additional 4 cents-per-gallon discount.

If you spend $300-$399.99 per billing period, you’ll get an additional 6 ccents-per-gallon discount.

If you spend $400-$499.99 per billing period, you’ll get an additional 8 cents-per-gallon discount.

If you spend $500 or more per billing period, you’ll get an additional 10 cents-per-gallon discount.

Depending on the fuel dispenser, fuel discounts are applied as an immediate discount at the pump or as a statement credit.

The baseline 3 cents-per-gallon discount isn’t much of a deal; on 20 gallons of gas, you’d save only 60 cents.

If, however, you’re able to put enough spending on the Visa version of the card, you could get up to 13 cents off every gallon, which would save you a more impressive $2.60 on a 20-gallon fill-up. Just note that to get any discount, you’ll have to commit to filling up at Chevron or Texaco stations. Also be aware that even if you earn the Visa Spend Fuel Discount, it’s only good for the month in which you hit the spending requirement. To get it again, you’ll need to make enough purchases on the card in subsequent billing cycles.

One more caveat: Visa Spend Fuel Discounts are capped at $300 per year.

For a more straightforward option with much fewer restrictions, you could instead consider a general-purpose credit card that earns a high rewards rate on all gas purchases, no matter what brand and no matter how much you spend with the card. The $0-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph® Card, for instance, earns an unlimited 3x back in multiple spending categories, including at gas stations. It also features a generous welcome bonus: Earn 20,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months – that’s a $200 cash redemption value.

3. The welcome offer is solid, but short-lived

All Techron Advantage cardholders can get the same welcome bonus: a 62 cents-per-gallon discount in the first 30 days of account opening. (This offer applies to accounts opened between Oct. 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026.)

This temporary bonus stacks on top of the baseline 3 cents-per-gallon discount.

4. Each credit card has a unique perk

The Techron Advantage Visa card comes with cell phone insurance up to $300 per claim. A $50 deductible applies.

If you have the (non-Visa) Techron Advantage card, you have access to an “always-on” deferred interest promotion for six months on purchases of $199 or more. However, this is not the same as a true 0% intro APR offer. If you don’t pay off the balance in full by the end of those six months, you’ll owe interest on the total amount of the transaction, retroactive to the purchase date.

A credit card with a true 0% intro APR period, on the other hand, doesn’t work like that. If you still owe a balance at the end of the 0% promotion, you’ll owe interest only on the remaining balance, if there is any.

🤓Nerdy Tip

The promotional financing offer on the Techron Advantage card only applies to purchases made at auto shops that accept Synchrony Car Care credit cards.

5. Join the rewards program, get more fuel discounts

As noted earlier, the Techron cards’ 3-cents-per-gallon discount is modest. To beef up your savings, join the Chevron Texaco Rewards Program in the Chevron or Texaco apps. Points earned within that loyalty program combine with the credit cards’ discounts.

Rewards program members get 5 points for each gallon of gas purchased from a Chevron or Texaco station. Those points can be redeemed for a discount between 5 and 50 cents per gallon. One point is worth one-tenth of a cent, so you’d need 500 points to get the maximum 50 cents discount.
