Australian government releases response to international education inquiry

The Australian government has released its response to the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade inquiry, ‘Quality and Integrity – the Quest for Sustainable Growth: Interim Report into International Education’.

The response, coordinated by the Department of Education in consultation with government agencies, addresses the committee’s interim report, which was tabled on October 19, 2023 and set out 29 recommendations for the sector.

The inquiry examined Australia’s tourism and international education sectors, with key themes including education and migration agents, skilled-work pathways, market diversification, regulation and accreditation, data and transparency, and student communication.

In its response, the Australian government said it “welcomes” the interim report and noted that its recommendations “broadly align with its priorities and recent reforms to strengthen the quality and integrity of the international education sector.”

“In the interim report the Committee recognised the need for determined and focused actions against unscrupulous providers to combat the systemic exploitation of Australia’s education and migration systems and better regulate education agents,” the response states.

Government will continue to act to prevent the exploitation of students and protect Australia’s reputation as a high-quality international education providerDepartment of Education, in consultation with government agencies

“Government will continue to act to prevent the exploitation of students and protect Australia’s reputation as a high-quality international education provider. This Australian government response outlines several key reforms which address issues raised in the interim report.”

Across the 29 recommendations, the government broadly indicates support, agreeing or agreeing in-principle with the majority, particularly those relating to integrity, oversight and data sharing. A smaller number of recommendations were noted without firm commitments, including calls for a coordinated ‘Team Australia’ approach.

The response reinforces policy directions already underway, including a focus on strengthening regulation, improving system integrity and maintaining a more managed approach to the sector’s growth.

This is a developing story. A more detailed analysis of the government’s response, including reaction from sector stakeholders, will follow.
