AARP Members Can Save on Walmart+—Here’s How
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

By linking an AARP membership to a Walmart+ account, shoppers can reduce their annual subscription costs and access fuel discounts at Exxon and Mobil stations. These combined savings help make essential errands more affordable for households everywhere. PJ McDonnell/Shutterstock

When it comes to stretching your dollar as far as it can go, many people have looked to memberships to save a little extra money. Sure, the initial membership may cost money, but a lot of the time, it can add up to substantial savings throughout the year. For AARP members, there are a plethora of discounts that you can unlock. Most people think of travel discounts when they think about AARP, but they go beyond that. In fact, your AARP membership can trim a significant amount of money off a Walmart+ membership.

But is it worth it? It really depends on your specific shopping habits, commute, and personal needs. Here is how you can get a discounted Walmart+ membership and what it can get you.

How Your AARP Membership Impacts Walmart+ Costs

AARP members can receive $40 off the standard Walmart+ annual membership, reducing the regular annual price from $98 to $58, provided they enroll through the official AARP offer and maintain an active AARP membership. Existing annual members can generally receive the discount at their next renewal after verifying their AARP membership.

This benefit is designed to be user-friendly, allowing both new and existing members to either start a discounted plan or transition their current subscription at the next renewal cycle. It is important to note that the discount is subject to annual confirmation of your AARP membership status.

Who Can Get the Discount?

Unlocking Fuel Discounts at the Pump

Once you are a Walmart+ member, you will unlock fuel discounts as well. Members can get 10 cents per gallon off at participating Exxon and Mobil stations using the Walmart mobile app. Walmart+ also offers fuel savings at participating Walmart, Murphy, and Sam’s Club fuel locations, though availability and discount amounts can vary by location.

To access these savings, you simply navigate to the “Member prices on fuel” section within the Walmart app while at the station. You will then enter a 6-digit discount ID provided by the app at the pump before fueling your vehicle.

At Exxon and Mobil stations, the Walmart+ fuel discount generally cannot be combined with Exxon Mobil Rewards+ discounts or certain other fuel rewards programs. If you already participate in another rewards program, compare which option provides the greater savings before fueling.

Fuel discounts can add up over time, but the overall value of Walmart+ depends on how often you use benefits such as grocery delivery, free shipping, pharmacy services, and member pricing on fuel. Families who regularly shop at Walmart or commute long distances may see greater value than occasional shoppers.

Stacking Benefits for Greater Financial Control

The real value of these memberships lies in “stacking” the benefits to cover different areas of your life beyond just gas and groceries. For instance, while your Walmart+ membership provides free shipping and grocery delivery, your AARP membership can offer additional perks like prescription savings at the Walmart Pharmacy.

While Walmart+ includes pharmacy-related conveniences, AARP members may also qualify for prescription savings through the AARP Prescription Discounts program at participating pharmacies. Savings vary by medication and pharmacy, so comparing prices before filling a prescription can help maximize the benefit.

Maximizing Your Annual Savings Potential

Membership programs deliver the greatest value when you use multiple benefits instead of focusing on just one. For households that regularly shop at Walmart, fill up at participating fuel stations, or use grocery delivery, combining an AARP membership with Walmart+ may help reduce everyday expenses throughout the year. Reviewing the eligibility requirements and renewal terms each year can help ensure you’re continuing to receive every available discount.

Have you already linked your AARP membership to your Walmart+ account, or do you have another favorite way to save on gas and groceries? Let us know your tips in the comments!
