Wedding season is a time of celebration, new beginnings, and for some, changing your name after marriage. If you decide to change your name after getting married, it’s important to update your Social Security card to match your new legal name. This helps keep your records accurate and avoids problems with your taxes, job, or benefits. We’ll walk you through what you need to know and how to get started.

How to Change or Correct Your Name on Your Social Security Card

Below are the steps to update your Social Security card after you legally change your name.

Start Online:Visit the SSN and Card webpage and answer a few questions to find out the best way to apply for your corrected card. In some states, you can use your personal my Social Security account to request a corrected card. Otherwise, you can start your application online.In-Person Help:If you need help in person, you must make an appointment at your local Social Security office or Card Center. In some cases, you may be able to schedule your appointment online.Paper Application:If you can’t use the online services, you’ll need to fill out a paper Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5) and bring the required documents to your appointment.

What Documents will you Need?

To get a Social Security card with your new name, you’ll need to show proof of:

Your identity – U.S. driver’s license, State-issued non-driver identification card, or U.S. passportYour new legal name and the name change event (like a marriage certificate)U.S. citizenship or lawful noncitizen status, if needed – Permanent Resident Card (I-551), Green Card, or Employment Authorization Document (I-766), work permit
