The US offers access to capital and an appetite for risk found nowhere else in the world.
The US dominates the world’s list of the most valuable companies. Indeed, of the top twenty publicly traded companies today, seventeen are American. This is a great US economic advantage, derived partly from policy and partly from lucky historical circumstances. It makes the lives of ordinary Americans better. And the US should seek to protect and expand this advantage where possible.
It’s of course no surprise to see the US create more valuable companies than other countries; the US is the world’s richest large country, and its largest rich country. But its share of the world’s greatest companies is outsized even for its size and wealth. And it is worth considering why this happens.
