Dwayne Johnson’s weight loss: The Rock shares how a gut problem taught him that true fitness is more than muscles and gym

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson left fans surprised at the Venice Film Festival when he walked the red carpet with a visibly leaner frame. The Hollywood star is preparing for his role in The Smashing Machine, where he plays MMA legend Mark Kerr, and reports suggest he has shed close to 28 kilos for the part.

While the new look has become the talk of the festival, Johnson has in the past spoken about the deeper reasons that shaped his approach to health. In an earlier podcast, the actor revealed that he was once advised to take medication for a possible heart ailment, only to later discover that his real problem lay in his gut health. Years of antibiotics had disrupted his system, causing deficiencies that no amount of strict dieting or training could fix.

Health more than just muscles and gym: Dwayne Johnson

Johnson, who spent decades in professional wrestling and later became one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars, is often seen as the model of strength and discipline. His daily workouts and strict diet have become part of his public image, inspiring millions of fans around the world. Johnson explained that this experience changed the way he views fitness. Reflecting on the experience, he admitted that physical appearance can be misleading if the body is not well on the inside. Instead, he stressed the importance of energy, balance, and resilience—the qualities that come from looking after internal health. “Real fitness is not about how big your muscles are,” he said, reflecting on the gut imbalance that forced him to rethink health from a deeper perspective.

“Data, not noise” as the real guide

The actor also advised against blindly following health tips and fitness trends online. Johnson said that when it comes to health and fitness, people today are surrounded by countless tips and opinions, many of which can be misleading. “There are so many voices, so many opinions, so much advice,” he said. Instead, he said people should pay attention to medical data and lab results, which provide a more reliable picture of what the body actually needs. He explained that towards the end of 2023 he began feeling unwell, but doctors could not identify the cause. In the early stages, he was even advised to consider heart medication. That moment, Johnson said, made him realise how crucial it is to rely on proper testing and data instead of generalised prescriptions. “Had I not gone deeper into the data, I would have been on unnecessary medication for the rest of my life,” he said.

Discovering the real problem

Further tests revealed a very different picture. Johnson said advanced blood panels, stool tests and biomarker scans showed that his main issue was not his heart but his gut. Years of antibiotics had disrupted his gut bacteria, leaving him with nutritional deficiencies despite a clean and consistent diet. Functional medicine testing, Johnson added, allowed him to finally pinpoint the root cause. “The numbers don’t lie,” he said, underlining his belief that measurable data offers more clarity than the noise of popular health trends or quick fixes.

Rebuilding his health

Johnson shared that once the problems were identified, he worked with specialists to rebuild his gut health. Probiotics, plant-based compounds, and a specially designed gut health shake became part of his routine. Correcting deficiencies in vitamin D, omega-3s, magnesium and folate helped him restore balance.

While he did not frame these changes in terms of weight loss or fitness goals, he emphasised that this shift gave him energy, clarity, and long-term stability. The actor said that understanding his own numbers and working with targeted data-driven solutions helped him avoid unnecessary medication and take back control over his health.

Health as the best gift to children

Beyond his own body, Johnson connected the lesson to his family life. “Health is the best gift you can give your kids,” he said. For him, investing in his health today is about ensuring that he remains strong and present for his daughters in the years to come.

He said no amount of fame, money or career success could replace the simple fact of being healthy and active for his children. “That is the greatest investment you can make,” he added, calling it the foundation of everything else.
