Decentralized AI favored by majority of Americans: DCG poll
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

Nearly three-quarters of surveyed Americans believe decentralized artificial intelligence is more likely to support innovation and progress over a centralized counterpart, according to a Harris poll commissioned by crypto venture firm Digital Currency Group (DCG).

Results of the poll of 2,036 Americans aged 18 and over released on May 29 found that 56% favored decentralized AI, and 77% saw decentralized AI “as more beneficial to society overall.”

“Three-quarters of Americans agree that the transformative power of AI would benefit more people if it wasn’t consolidated in the hands of a few major players,” said DCG’s policy vice president, Julie Stitzel.

Notably, 67% of respondents said that centralized AI is likely more biased, and 63% said they think centralized AI is more likely to benefit Big Tech companies rather than the average person and that it is more likely to misuse user data.

Decentralized AI gains traction

In a bid to combat Big Tech’s dominance in AI, key industry players and AI experts have emphasized the importance of decentralized AI.

Chris Miglino, co-founder and CEO of DNA Fund, told Cointelegraph that decentralized AI models have the chance to become bigger than Bitcoin.

Last week, Ben Goertzel, the founder and CEO of SingularityNET, stated that he believed that AI should be decentralized as far back as the 90s.

Goertzel added that if artificial general intelligence — a hypothetical AI model that is as smart as a human — is to benefit humanity, it must be decentralized from the ground up.

On May 5, Tether CEO Paolo Adroino announced that the stablecoin issuer would soon be launching an AI platform that will have integrated support for Tether’s USDT and BTC payments.

Earlier this month, Thinkagents.ai, an AI agent protocol, launched a new open-source framework for building onchain agents that operate autonomously across decentralized networks. Over 70 crypto firms, including Yuga Labs and Magic Eden, have adopted the protocol.
