Understanding Consultative Exams in Your Disability Case
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

If you’re applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you may be scheduled for a consultative exam (CE). This can be confusing and may seem intimidating, but it’s a common and essential part of the disability determination process. At the Disability Attorneys of Michigan, we’re here to help you understand what a consultative exam is, why it’s required, and how it can impact your claim.

What Is a Consultative Exam?

A consultative exam is a medical evaluation scheduled by the Social Security Administration (SSA) when they need more information to decide the outcome of your disability claim. These exams are conducted by independent doctors—not your regular physicians—and are paid for by the SSA.

Reasons the SSA May Order a Consultative Exam

There are several reasons the SSA may schedule a CE, including:

Lack of recent medical records

Missing key medical evidence

Inconsistent or unclear documentation

No established relationship with a treating doctor

The goal of the CE is to fill in any medical gaps and help the SSA make an informed decision.

Types of Consultative Exams

The type of exam depends on your specific condition. Examples include:

Physical exams for conditions like back pain, arthritis, or mobility limitations

Mental evaluations for issues like depression, anxiety, PTSD, or cognitive impairments

Specialized testing, such as X-rays, bloodwork, or pulmonary function tests

The exams are typically brief and focused on your ability to function, not on long-term treatment.

What to Expect During the Exam

The exam will likely last between 15 and 60 minutes. The examiner will perform basic medical assessments related to your claim. You may be asked to describe your symptoms, daily limitations, and medical history. Then, the doctor will prepare a report and send it directly to the SSA.

How to Prepare for a Consultative Exam

Bring your ID and any requested documents

Arrive early: Missing your exam could delay or hurt your case

Be honest and specific: Describe your symptoms and limitations clearly

Do not exaggerate or minimize your symptoms—just be truthful

Trusted Social Security Disability Attorneys in Michigan

While an attorney does not attend the CE with you, having legal guidance can make a big difference. At Disability Attorneys of Michigan, we:

Help you prepare for your CE

Ensure the SSA has complete medical records

Advocate for your rights if the CE report is inaccurate or misleading

Appeal a denial if the CE is used unfairly against your claim

Consultative exams are a routine part of the Social Security disability process, but they can also have a significant impact on your case. If you’re scheduled for one, it’s crucial to understand your rights and responsibilities.

At Disability Attorneys of Michigan, we’ve helped thousands of clients navigate the disability process, including what to do before, during, and after a CE. If you have questions or need assistance with your disability claim, speak with a lawyer at Disability Attorneys of Michigan for free.
