Playing to Win in a System That Prefers the Old Playbook

The technology ecosystem loves to talk about innovation and disruption.

We celebrate the underdog startup that topples the incumbent. We glorify the founder who dares to “think different.” We fund moonshots, preach fail fast, and reward bold bets.

And yet, for all this rhetoric, many of the ecosystem’s foundational elements – private equity / venture capital and professional services / management consulting – still rely on the same old playbook. One built for the establishment, pedigreed, and elite:

Private schools
Elite universities
Top investment banks and consulting firms
Prestigious MBA programs

These institutions have produced incredible talent and are cornerstones of the ecosystem. But when they remain the primary gatekeepers, we risk recycling the same ideas and stifling fresh thinking.

Worse, they often expect founders to take enormous risks while failing to do the same themselves. True risk is uncomfortable and even scary, but it is also the only way to unlock real change. When firms cling to the same profiles and the same patterns, they limit the very innovation they claim to celebrate.

So, what do you do if you do not perfectly fit the pattern? If you did not take the “approved” path but still want to make an impact?

As my friend Julie Gurner often recently posted, you have two choices: a) play to win b) fold

At York IE, one of our core values is that “Outsiders Are the Next Generation of Business.” We believe the next wave of innovation will come from those willing to challenge the playbook. In fact, we don’t believe there is a single playbook at all: only a collection of insights drawn from many places, each feeding into the right strategy or tactic for the moment. Context matters. True progress comes from people who choose the hard road, even when the easy one is right in front of them.

David Cancel often reminds me, “You always choose the hard way to do it.”

I take that as the highest compliment. The hard way is earned. The hard way demands resilience and creativity. And when you succeed, it means more because you know you built it brick by brick.

At York IE, we do not just accept that reality, we celebrate it. And if you are the kind of founder, operator, or investor who wants to challenge the status quo, you will always find a friend in us.
