The Actions at the CDC That Pushed Marine Corps Families to File a Lawsuit
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

Abuse is a scary thing to experience, even for grown adults. When it happens to small children, it can be extremely traumatizing, and some children may never recover from it. Legal help is one way that victims can get justice, ensuring that perpetrators are not allowed to walk free.

This article will talk about the legal action against military a base daycare for child abuse that families brought. It will also provide some tips for families to protect their children and signs of abuse to watch out for.

What is the case about?

Between 2020 and 2021, children of military families in the Yuna base of Arizona were subjected to physical abuse. This happened over the course of 3 months, and caregivers failed to intervene or inform the families of the abuse. When it came to light, the base failed to provide adequate information to the families about what went on.

What does the CDC do?

A child development center is a care facility provided at marine bases for children of families. There are a variety of developmental programs that help children learn social skills, language skills and promote their physical development. The CDC is specifically for children up to the age of 5.

Legal Proceedings

The families initially brought cases against the Navy in 2023, but the cases were declined twice. They were forced to bring a federal tort lawsuit against the government for failing to adequately supervise their children and for poor hiring practices that allowed the abuse to take place.

The child abuse was initially reported by the director of the center to law enforcement, who, upon investigating security camera footage, found evidence of abuse that lasted over a month. Children of the families were repeatedly manhandled, pushed around, and verbally abused by childcare workers at the facility. No one at the center intervened or reported the abuse, leading to the children developing serious disorders, including self-harming behavior.

Two CDC employees who were named in the claim faced charges, including a 2-week jail sentence for one and a 5-year extended probation for the other. A third employee who was named in the claim did not face any charges.

The case is still ongoing, with families demanding up to a million dollars in compensation for the cost of therapy and mental health treatment. The families claim that had the CDC brought the abuse to their attention earlier or otherwise done something to prevent it; they would not have had to face so much trauma or spend so much money trying to overcome it.

There are many signs of abuse that children exhibit, and parents should watch out for them. This includes:

Signs of being neglected
Being unclean or disheveled
Scars and bruises
Fear
Being withdrawn
Regression

While it’s not possible to always protect your children, there are a few steps you can take to prevent abuse:

Teach them about safety and boundaries through child-friendly means.
Keep an eye on the child’s behavior and emotional state.
Build a safe and loving environment so that your children can talk to you about anything they feel uncomfortable about.
Do research on childcare facilities and other places before enrolling their children there.
Get professional support if your child seems to be experiencing emotional or behavioral issues.
Hire a lawyer to file charges against those responsible.

Conclusion

The shocking nature of these crimes shows how badly the system has failed children left in its care. Tragically, children as young as a year old had to face abuse at a marine base, no less, and they may never recover from it. The government should look into hiring and reporting procedures for the CDC and ensure adequate measures are taken to prevent such incidents from happening again.
