Although stock market traders and attentive investors may work every day of the year, markets worldwide will close on certain holidays. While these special days will vary by country, there are some you can always count on. Therefore, active traders will want to mark these on their calendars to ensure they complete transactions within specific timeframes. So, if you’re wondering “Is the stock market closed on New Year’s Eve 2025?”, here’s what you need to know.

What Are the Standard Stock Market Hours?

This may seem like a simple question, but it has more answers and exceptions than you may think. So, for this article, we’re going to focus on the U.S. stock market. This includes the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq Stock Market (NASDAQ).

These markets normally open at 9:30 a.m. and close at 4:00 p.m. EST every day, Monday through Friday, except on holidays. However, certain types of securities trade on their own schedules. Some of these have pre-market and after-hours trading options. If you are focusing on these securities, you’ll want to remain aware of these timetables.

Is The Stock Market Closed on New Year’s Eve 2025?

No. The stock market is open on New Year’s Eve for regular trading. It will close on New Year’s Day (Thursday, January 1, 2026). So, you’ll want to get any end-of-year investments made before the close of business on Wednesday.

The bond markets will close early at 2:00 p.m. EST on December 31 and will remain closed on Thursday, January 1 as well. Following the holiday, all markets will reopen and resume normal hours on Friday, January 2, 2026.

What Are the Stock Market Holidays for 2026?

As mentioned above, the stock markets reduce trading hours or close for several holidays every year. Although some fall on the same date, others change from year to year. To help you stay ahead of your trades, this is the U.S. Stock Market holiday schedule for 2026:

New Year’s Day – Thursday, January 1
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – Monday, January 19
Presidents Day – Monday, February 16
Good Friday – Friday, April 3
Memorial Day – Monday, May 25
Juneteenth – Friday, June 19
Independence Day – Saturday, July 4 (observed Friday, July 3)**
Labor Day – Monday, September 7
Thanksgiving – Thursday, November 26**
Christmas Day – Friday, December 25**

** The markets will close early the day before these holidays at 1:00 p.m. EST (1:15 for eligible options). Crossing session orders are accepted from 1:00 EST for continuous executions until 1:30 EST on these dates. The late trading sessions for NYSE American Equities, NYSE Arca Equities, NYSE Chicago, and NYSE National close at 5:00 p.m. EST.

It’s also worth mentioning that the bond market adds two additional holidays to its calendar for Columbus Day and Veterans Day. Additionally, it closes at 2:00 p.m. on Black Friday, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve. Being aware of this schedule will ensure that you can plan accordingly.
