Is The Stock Market Closed on Columbus Day 2025?

Monday, October 13, 2025, is Columbus Day (also observed in some places as Indigenous Peoples’ Day). As a federal holiday, many government offices, banks, and services shut down—but that doesn’t necessarily mean the stock markets do. Let’s break down what happens in the U.S. markets on Columbus Day 2025.

Is the Stock Market Closed on Columbus Day 2025?

No, the U.S. stock markets (NYSE and Nasdaq) remain open on Columbus Day. According to market holiday schedules, Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples’ Day is not among the days when the stock exchanges shut down.

So if you were hoping to place trades or monitor the markets, you’ll be able to do so just as on a typical Monday.

Are Opening or Closing Hours Altered?

Nope — the markets operate under their usual hours. The regular trading hours (9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time) still apply on Columbus Day. Thus, there’s no early close or delayed open just because it’s a federal holiday.

What About the Bond Market?

This is where the situation shifts. The bond market (like U.S. dollar–denominated government bonds, corporate bonds, municipal bonds, etc.) is recommended to close on Columbus Day by SIFMA.

SIFMA’s 2025 fixed income market recommendations include a full closure for U.S. bond trading on Monday, October 13, 2025, in observance of Columbus Day. That means if you were hoping to trade bonds that day, you likely won’t be able to. (That said, SIFMA’s recommendations are guidance; individual firms may make their own decisions.)

What About International Markets?

Because Columbus Day is a U.S. federal holiday and not a global holiday, most international stock exchanges remain open on October 13, 2025. Unless a particular country or region has a local holiday that coincides, you can generally expect markets abroad to trade as normal.

U.S. Stock & Bond Market Schedule in 2025: Quick Reference

Stock Market (NYSE / Nasdaq)

Open on Columbus Day (October 13, 2025)
Regular hours: 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. ET
Other holiday closures follow the standard list (New Year’s Day, MLK Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas)
Early closures (1 p.m. ET) are typically scheduled for the day before Independence Day, the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve.

Bond Market

Closed on Columbus Day (October 13, 2025) by SIFMA recommendation
Also closed on other holidays in line with stock markets, plus additional ones like Veterans Day (per SIFMA)
Partial/early closes (at 2 p.m. ET) occur on certain days (such as the day before major holidays) as recommended by SIFMA

Invest Without Interruption This Monday

If you were wondering, “Is the stock market closed on Columbus Day 2025?”, the answer is no — NYSE and Nasdaq operate under their standard hours. But if you’re dealing in bonds, expect that the bond market will likely be closed. Always check with your broker or trading platform to confirm the exact operating status for your assets.

Do you plan on conducting any trades around the Columbus Day holiday? Have you ever wanted to trade only to be impacted by a holiday market closure? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
