According to the Pew Research Center, about half of Americans say the complexity of the federal tax system bothers them a lot. But luckily the IRS does offer help to taxpayers who have questions about the filing process. Although wait times can be long, it’s possible to speak to a live representative at the IRS and get the assistance you need. Here are 4 ways to find an IRS phone number to talk to a person so you can get your tax issues resolved.
How to Find an IRS Phone Number to Talk to a Person
Call the Main IRS Phone Number
If you have questions about your tax return, you can call 1-800-829-1040 to speak to a live IRS representative. This is the main IRS phone number that operates from 7 AM to 7 PM EST Monday through Friday. For general business-related tax issues, the IRS phone number to talk to a person is 1-800-829-4933. This helpline operates during the same hours as the main phone number.
Keep in mind that wait times for these numbers can be long if many taxpayers need assistance. The IRS also recommends that you have certain information close at hand when you call, including:
Your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number if you don’t have one
Your filing status
Your tax return from the prior year and the return you’re calling about
Correspondence the IRS has sent you
The main IRS customer service line works best for less complex tax issues. If you have a unique situation or very specific questions, one of the other methods of contacting the IRS below may work better for you.
IRS Phone Numbers for Specific Tax Issues
In addition to the main customer service line, the IRS has separate phone numbers for different tax issues. For example, you can call 866-699-4083 from 8 AM to 3:30 PM EST to get answers to estate and gift tax questions. Here are other numbers you can call for assistance depending on your situation:
Call 866-699-4096 for excise tax questions from 8 AM to 6 PM EST
Call 877-829-5500 for non-profit taxes from 8 AM to 5 PM local time
Interpretation services for Spanish speakers – 800-829-1040
Interpretation services for all other languages – 833-553-9895
Callers who are hearing impaired should dial – 800-829-4059
You might be able to get help faster by calling one of these numbers since fewer taxpayers may be using them.
Make an Appointment at Your Local IRS Office
Some tax issues may require you to speak with a representative face-to-face instead of over the phone. If you need more hands-on support, you can find your local IRS office using this tool. It shows you the hours of your local office and the types of services it offers. When you’re ready to make an appointment, you can call 844-545-5640 for scheduling assistance.
Contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service
The IRS also runs a Taxpayer Advocate Service in every state. They can help you understand your rights as a taxpayer and resolve issues you haven’t been able to work out with the IRS. They understand that solving tax issues can be challenging and confusing and are there to advocate for taxpayers who are having difficulties.
This tool can help you look up the Taxpayer Advocate Service Office in your state and find their phone number so you can reach out.
