The Pacific Ring of Fire is very active with volcanoes and earthquakes all coming alive and clustering. We will probably see even a 9.0 quake off the coast of Japan, most likely soon, perhaps between April and July. These events tend to cluster. Moving the plate in one area results in pressure in another region. This is just 8.0 or higher. The 1906 San Francisco April 18, 1906, quake was devastating, but it was 7.9.
