Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party is projected to lose its majority in the country’s parliament, public broadcaster NHK reported early Monday.
NHK said it was unclear if the LDP and coalition partner Komeito would secure the 233 seats needed to keep the majority. The parties had most recently secured 180 seats.
If the coalition fails to maintain its majority, it would be the first time since 2009.
However, NHK reported that some candidates who won seats as independents may be reinstated by the LDP, which did not endorse them due to a scandal over fundraising.
