You probably know Chewy as an online retailer of pet products, but it also offers pet insurance. Chewy partners with Lemonade (3 stars) and Trupanion (2.3 stars) — two of the biggest pet insurers — to offer comprehensive pet insurance through its CarePlus suite of wellness and insurance plans.

Learn more: The best pet insurance companies

Learn more: Is pet insurance worth it?

Chewy offers pet insurance policies through Lemonade and Trupanion. Depending on which partner issues your policy, you can get accident-only coverage, accident and illness coverage, and wellness coverage. Not all insurers and plan types are available in every state.

The coverage limits, deductible options, and waiting periods also depend on the insurer and the specific plan you choose. For example, Trupanion offers unlimited annual coverage for eligible vet expenses, whereas Lemonade only covers up to $20,000 per year.

You can get a quote for Lemonade and Trupanion pet insurance plans on Chewy’s website. Apply for a quote to see which plans are available based on your pet and your location.

Chewy CarePlus insurance plans can cover accidents and illnesses, like lacerations, cancer, hospitalization, and prescription medications. You can also add an optional wellness plan that covers preventative and routine care.

The exact insurance plans and coverages available depend on the Chewy partner that issues your pet insurance policy. Here are the plans that Lemonade and Trupanion offer, and what each one covers.

Learn more: Your guide to what pet insurance covers

Lemonade accident and illness policy

Lemonade doesn’t offer an accident-only plan, but has three accident and illness policies — Base, Value, and Value Plus. The Base policy provides the least amount of coverage, and the Value Plus plan provides the highest level of coverage. Here are some things that are covered under a Base policy:

Diagnostic testing

Specialty care

Emergency care

Hospitalization

Diabetes

Surgery

Chronic conditions

Cancer

Allergies

Eye disorders

Prescription medications

If you want the most coverage, choose the Value Plus plan, which covers everything in the Base plan, plus:

Vet exam fees

Physical therapy

Behavioral therapy

Trupanion accident and illness policy

Trupanion offers two accident and illness policies — Essential Accident & Illness and Complete Accident & Illness. Here’s what’s covered under the Essential Accident & Illness plan (base plan):

Diagnostic testing, including X-rays

Surgeries

Hospitalization

Emergency care

Prescription medications and supplements

Prescription diet food

Chronic conditions

Congenital and hereditary conditions

Orthotics and prosthetic devices

The Complete Accident & Illness plan covers everything in the Essential plan, plus:

Vet exam fees

Physical therapy

Behavioral therapy

Trupanion offers an accident-only plan through Chewy CarePlus. This plan can cover things like broken bones, toxic ingestion, and getting hit by a car. It can help pay for treatment related to an accident, such as:

Lemonade offers two wellness plans that can be added to any Lemonade accident and illness policy. There’s no copayment, deductible, or waiting period, but there is an annual maximum for each covered service. We produced the figures below using the quote generator on the Lemonade website. Here’s what is covered under the pet wellness plans and the cost for each.

Accident and Illness: Value + Preventative Care

One blood test (up to $65)

One fecal test (up to $35)

One heartworm test (up to $40)

Trupanion offers two tiers of wellness plans — Wellness and Comprehensive Wellness. The Wellness Plan covers basic routine care services, up to a maximum annual coverage limit. Both plans provide similar coverages, but have different maximums for each covered service.

Wellness Plan

Comprehensive Wellness Plan

Exam fees (up to $90)

Fecal tests (up to $40)

Routine bloodwork (up to $75)

Heartworm tests (up to $45)

Trupanion’s pet wellness plans can be purchased as a standalone plan, even if you don’t buy a pet insurance policy. To get a Trupanion wellness plan, call Chewy at 1-800-672-4399.

Learn more: Why a pet wellness plan is worth considering

Chewy CarePlus insurance plans don’t cover preexisting conditions that developed before your pet was insured, or began during the waiting period. But your policy might cover preexisting conditions that are treatable and fully resolved, like parvovirus or kennel cough, if they come back.

Learn more: Pet insurance that covers preexisting conditions

Chewy CarePlus customers in select states get access to a free vet helpline through Chewy, but the service isn’t available 24/7. You can chat with a licensed vet daily from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. ET. The vet helpline isn’t available to customers in Alaska, Georgia, or Hawaii.

Every Chewy pet insurance plan has different exclusions depending on the partner company and the specific plan. Here are some things that aren’t typically covered by any Chewy pet insurance plan:

Preexisting conditions

Preventative care (unless you get a wellness plan)

Cosmetic procedures

Breeding and pregnancy

Cloning

Microchipping (unless you get a wellness plan)

Injuries or conditions from intentional acts, such as dog fighting or racing

Neglect

Boarding

Grooming

Experimental treatments

Lemonade customers can increase or decrease their coverage, with the following restrictions:

Increases: You can increase your coverage within 14 days of purchasing your policy. If you want to increase your coverage after the initial 14-day period, you must wait until your policy renews (one year after purchase).

Decreases: You can request a coverage decrease at any time through the Lemonade mobile app (not available in NH).

These are the requirements for increasing or decreasing your coverage if you have a Trupanion policy:

Increases: You can upgrade or change any part of your coverage in the first 30 days without having to cancel and purchase a new policy. You can also decrease your deductible or change your parasite preventative or food coverage during the renewal period.

Decreases: You can raise your deductible during the renewal period to reduce your premium. Trupanion only offers one reimbursement rate and annual coverage option, which can’t be changed.

Chewy has lower premiums than average for a plan with $5,000 in annual coverage. But for an unlimited policy, its average rate was much higher than that of the other insurers we reviewed.

Learn more: How much does pet insurance cost?

The average cost of Chewy pet insurance through Lemonade, with a $5,000 annual coverage limit, is $70.62 per month. Trupanion doesn’t offer a plan with $5,000 in annual coverage.

A Trupanion pet insurance plan from Chewy has an average premium of $184.97 per month for unlimited annual coverage, which is above average. Lemonade doesn’t offer a plan with unlimited coverage.

Learn more: How to compare pet insurance quotes

Chewy offers multi-pet discounts through Lemonade and Trupanion. Both companies offer 10% off when you insure more than one dog or cat. Most pet insurance companies offer a multi-pet discount of 5% or 10%, so these discounts are on the high end.

Chewy can pay the vet directly if you have a Trupanion policy, and your veterinarian can accept payments from Trupanion. Lemonade doesn’t have a direct vet pay option, so you’ll need to pay out of pocket at the vet and submit your invoice for reimbursement.

Learn more: Pet insurance that pays the vet directly

Chewy pet insurance claims are handled through the insurance company that issues your policy. Here’s how to file a claim based on your plan provider.

Lemonade claims can be filed through the Lemonade mobile app using these steps:

Open the Lemonade app and tap “File a Claim”

Answer some questions about the vet visit and how much you spent

Record a voice memo with more details about the claim (optional)

Upload the invoice from your vet

If your vet accepts direct payments, you don’t have to file a claim — just pay your portion of the bill at checkout, and Trupanion will cover the rest. But you’ll need to reach your deductible before your copayment kicks in.

If your vet can’t accept direct payments from Trupanion, you can send a copy of your itemized vet invoice and details about the claim to [email protected]. Alternatively, you can mail a copy of the invoice to:

Trupanion, Attn: Chewy Claims

6100 4th Avenue South, Suite 200

Seattle, WA 98108

Lemonade customers have 180 days from the date of treatment to submit a claim. Trupanion customers only have 90 days from the time of treatment to report a claim.

Lemonade says that almost 50% of pet insurance claims are settled immediately, assuming it has all the information needed. For Trupanion customers, manual claims are typically paid within one to two days after approval for direct deposit, or seven to 10 business days if you’re receiving a paper check.

Chewy has a mobile app, but it can only be used to shop for pet products. If you have a Lemonade pet insurance policy, you can use the Lemonade mobile app to submit and track claims, change your coverage, and more.

Trupanion doesn’t have a mobile app, but you can manage your policy, submit claims, and make payments through the online customer portal.

Chewy pet insurance is available nationwide. Lemonade’s pet insurance plans are sold in 41 states and Washington, D.C. Trupanion pet insurance is available in all 50 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico.

Lemonade doesn’t require a vet exam before enrollment, but you will need to submit your pet’s medical records. To get a Trupanion plan through Chewy CarePlus, your pet must have seen a vet within the 12 months prior to enrollment, unless they’re insured before their first birthday.

You can contact Chewy CarePlus’s 24/7 customer service at 1-800-672-4399. If you already have a Chewy pet insurance plan, you’ll need to contact your specific insurer for more information about claims, payments, and policy changes.

If you want to cancel a Chewy pet insurance policy, you’ll need to contact the insurance company that issues your policy (Lemonade or Trupanion). If you cancel within the first 30 days and you haven’t filed any claims, you’ll get a full refund (not available for Lemonade plans in NY or IN). If you cancel after 30 days, or if you filed any claims in the first 30 days, you might be eligible for a pro-rated refund.

Tim Manni and Jamie Young edited this article.

We researched the coverage details and prices for 28 pet insurance plans. We then weighted categories, and each pet insurer was scored relative to the others to find the best pet insurance companies. Here are the factors we incorporated.

Coverage types: 40% of score. We examined the coverage provided by the base policy without the extra cost of add-ons. This encompassed coverage for alternative therapy, behavioral therapy, dental illness, euthanasia or end-of-life expenses, exotic pets, hereditary and congenital conditions, preexisting conditions, prescription food and supplements, veterinary exam fees, and advertising/reward for lost/stolen pets.

Average cost: 30% of score. We evaluated costs in five states for $5,000 and unlimited coverage for a mixed-breed dog (age 1), a French bulldog (age 5), and a Labrador retriever (age 8).

Unlimited coverage option: 10% of score. We gave points when pet insurers offered an unlimited annual limit (or a $100,000 limit), which gives pet owners the most robust financial protection possible in the event of a catastrophic pet medical issue.

Direct payments to the veterinarian: 5% of score. We gave points to pet insurers that state on their websites that they accommodate direct vet payments.

No special waiting periods for special conditions: 5% of score. We gave points when pet insurers have no waiting periods for special conditions, such as cruciate ligament conditions.

Routine wellness plan: 5% of score. Companies that offer a routine wellness plan in addition to pet insurance received points.

Multi-pet discount: 5% of score. We gave points when pet insurers offered a discount for insuring multiple pets.
