Warehouse Club Rentals: Could Discounts Reach 35%?
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

Planning a vacation often starts with finding affordable flights and hotels, but rental cars can quietly become one of the biggest expenses. Many travelers don’t realize that their warehouse club membership may unlock rental car discounts that rival (or even beat) booking directly through the rental company. In some cases, members can access discounts of up to 35%, along with valuable perks like free additional drivers, flexible cancellation policies, or exclusive upgrades. Those savings won’t always be available on every reservation, but they can make a noticeable difference for families, retirees, and anyone traveling on a budget. Before you reserve your next vehicle, it’s worth taking a closer look at what your membership may already include.

Warehouse Clubs Offer More Than Bulk Grocery Savings

Many shoppers think of warehouse clubs as places to buy paper towels, groceries, and household essentials in bulk. However, memberships at retailers like BJ’s, Costco, and Sam’s Club often include travel portals that negotiate discounted pricing with major rental car companies. These programs work because warehouse clubs leverage their large membership bases to secure rates and perks that individual travelers may not receive when booking directly.

While the exact savings vary depending on destination, travel dates, vehicle availability, and rental company, members frequently find competitive pricing through these travel portals. You can compare available offers through BJ’s Travel and Costco Travel before committing to a reservation.

BJ’s Advertises Discounts of Up to 35%

Among the major warehouse clubs, BJ’s Wholesale Club prominently advertises rental car savings of up to 35% through its travel program. The discounts are available through participating brands and may also include promotional upgrades or additional offers depending on the rental company and booking period. It’s important to note that “up to 35%” represents the maximum advertised savings rather than a guaranteed discount on every reservation.

The phrase “up to 35% off” reflects the maximum advertised discount under certain circumstances, not the average savings travelers should expect. Actual discounts depend on demand, location, rental company, vehicle type, and travel dates, and in some cases the warehouse club rate may match (or even exceed) the price available elsewhere.

Extra Perks Can Be Worth as Much as the Discount

Sometimes the biggest savings aren’t reflected in the advertised price. Costco, for example, waives the additional driver fee with several participating rental companies, a benefit that could save couples or families dozens of dollars during a trip. Flexible cancellation policies may also provide value, allowing travelers to rebook if rates fall before departure. Executive Costco members may even earn rewards on eligible travel purchases, adding another layer of savings beyond the rental price itself.

Sometimes the lowest advertised rate isn’t actually the best value. Warehouse club reservations often include benefits such as a free second driver, more flexible cancellation terms, no prepayment requirements, or member rewards that can offset a slightly higher daily rental rate. Consumer Reports found these added benefits frequently tipped the balance even when the sticker price matched booking directly.

Comparing Prices Still Matters Every Time

Warehouse club discounts should never replace comparison shopping. Independent research from Consumer Reports found that warehouse club pricing sometimes beats booking directly with rental companies, but in other situations the prices are identical or occasionally higher depending on the company and rental terms.

What often makes the warehouse club reservation more attractive is the inclusion of perks such as free cancellation, unlimited mileage, or waived extra driver fees that may not be included with a direct booking. Rental prices also fluctuate constantly based on demand, location, season, and inventory, meaning yesterday’s best deal may not be today’s lowest price.

Warehouse Club
Potential Rental Perks

BJ’s
Advertises savings of up to 35%; member-only rental deals

Costco
Free additional driver with participating companies, flexible cancellation, Executive rewards on eligible bookings

Sam’s Club
Member pricing through travel partners, promotions vary

Even with member pricing, when you reserve your vehicle can significantly influence the final cost. Rental prices often change several times before your trip, especially for reservations that allow free cancellation. Experienced travelers frequently book an acceptable rate early, then continue checking prices in the weeks leading up to departure and rebook if a better deal appears.

Before Reserving a Rental Car

Compare the warehouse club rate with booking direct.
Check whether an additional driver is included.
Compare cancellation policies.
Look for prepaid vs. pay-at-counter pricing.
Verify unlimited mileage.
Compare the total price after taxes and airport fees.

Rental car pricing is highly dynamic. It’s common for rates to change multiple times before a trip, especially around holidays, school breaks, and weekends. One advantage of reservations with free cancellation is that travelers can periodically check prices and rebook if a lower rate becomes available.

Making Your Membership Work Harder

If you already pay for a warehouse club membership, overlooking its travel benefits could mean leaving money on the table. Rental car discounts are only one piece of a broader package that may also include hotel deals, vacation packages, cruises, and travel support. The best approach is to view the warehouse club travel portal as another comparison tool rather than your only option. By checking member pricing alongside direct rental company websites and other travel booking platforms, you’ll have a better chance of finding the lowest overall cost while taking advantage of valuable extras.
