This National Volunteers Month, the Medicare Rights Center invites our New York City community members to join us as volunteers on our national helpline.
Volunteers are essential to our mission, working alongside our helpline staff to answer Medicare questions, assist with program enrollment, and advocate for older adults and people with disabilities across the country. All volunteers are trained by our expert, experienced staff in our New York City office, and most continue to volunteer weekly from that office. We also welcome volunteers fluent in Spanish.
Our team of volunteers is a diverse group of all ages and backgrounds. Many had no prior experience with health care counseling but have now become Medicare experts over their years of volunteering. Others joined us after careers in health care, social work, or law, bringing years of specialized experience to our helpline. Each volunteer has enriched our community and made a mark on our work, helping us earn the trust of so many people with Medicare.
In the past year, Medicare Rights volunteers contributed a combined 7,904 hours of service and helped us answer nearly 30,000 helpline questions and submit nearly 2,200 benefit applications. They identified recurring issues for Medicare beneficiaries, directing our policy and advocacy efforts toward Medicare–Medicaid integration and cost-saving programs like Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help. Their work connected us to the experiences of thousands of beneficiaries and helped us understand the impacts of changing health care policies in real time.
In the past year, Medicare Rights volunteers contributed a combined 7,904 hours of service.

We love celebrating our volunteers and do so twice a year at our in-person events: the Volunteer Luncheon in the spring and the Annual Benefit in the fall. We’re looking forward to seeing many of our volunteers next month at the luncheon!
Volunteer applications are available on our website at medicarerights.org/volunteer. Our next volunteer training session is coming up; for details, email our Coordinator of Volunteers, Maxwell Arnaud, at [email protected].
