A variety of checking and savings options

Summary: First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO) was founded in 1857. The bank is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, and offers services online, but is only available to customers who live in eight U.S. states.

Note: FNBO Direct is the online banking division of FNBO, which offers high-yield savings and money market accounts, available nationwide.

FNBO’s Access Debit account gives you the bare minimum in amenities you need with a checking account. This account has no monthly fee or minimum balance requirement, but it doesn’t come with checks, and no overdrafts are allowed.

This basic checking account from FNBO has no monthly fee or minimum balance requirement, though it doesn’t earn interest or offer overdraft protection. The account does come with free checks.

With FNBO’s Premier Checking account, your deposits can earn 0.02% APY, although rates depend on where you live. If you carry an average daily balance of $15,000 or more, you can have the $15 monthly fee waived. The account also comes with free checks and overdraft protection.

FNBO’s Savings account earns interest if you also have an FNBO checking account. The rate you earn depends on your deposit amount and location.

This account has no monthly fee or minimum balance requirement, but customers can only make six free withdrawals per month. After that, there’s a $5 fee for each withdrawal.

With FNBO’s Money Market account, interest rates depend on your deposit amount and location. There’s no monthly fee or minimum balance requirement, but a minimum deposit of $1,000 is needed to open the account.

Like the savings account, you’re limited to six fee-free withdrawals per month, but this account does come with checks.

FNBO’s Flex Savings is a unique hybrid of a CD and savings account. With this account, you can choose to lock in an interest rate at any time, for a duration of either three or six months. The highest rate currently available is 3.5% for a 3-month lock.

Flex Savings has a $25 monthly fee, but it’s waived if you keep a balance of $1,000 or more. Account holders get two free withdrawals per month.

You can open a CD at FNBO with just $500. FNBO CD terms range from 91 days to five years, with a wide range of rates. The most you’ll earn is currently 3.20% APY if you don’t have an FNBO checking account, or up to 3.7% APY if you do.

FNBO offers a variety of loan types for customers, so you can potentially do all of your banking and borrowing in one place. Here’s an overview of FNBO’s loan types:

Mortgages: Conventional mortgages, FHA and VA loans, home equity loans, and more.

Personal: Personal loans and lines of credit, as well as debt consolidation loans.

Auto: New and used car loans. (Auto refinancing is not available.)

FNBO offers four different credit cards with a variety of rewards and benefits, including a secured credit card that comes with rewards:

Evergreen Credit Card: Unlimited 2% cash back with a $200 welcome bonus and no annual fee.

Getaway Credit Card: Up to three points per dollar, with 0% APR for the first 12 months and no annual fee. Balance transfer fee is 5%.

GreenSelect Credit Card: Zero interest for the first 18 months and no annual fee. Balance transfer fee is 5%.

Rewards Secured Credit Card: Available for deposits between $300 and $5,000. Purchases earn one point per dollar.

If you’re looking for a checking or savings account that has no monthly fees, you have several options to choose from at FNBO. That said, customers may incur fees in certain instances.

Pros:

Variety of deposit accounts: FNBO offers several checking and savings accounts, so you can choose the account with the features that best suit you.

Rate-lock on savings: Most savings accounts have variable interest rates, but FNBO’s Flex Savings account has a rate-lock feature.

Rewards on secured cards: Most secured credit cards don’t earn rewards, but FNBO’s secured card earns one point per dollar.

Cons:

Interest rates on deposits vary by location: The interest rates on most of FNBO’s deposit accounts vary depending on where you live.

Below-market rates: Most of FNBO’s deposit accounts earn little or no interest.

Limited service area: FNBO only offers banking in Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming.

FNBO doesn’t offer chat support through its website, but you can call 800-642-0014 for banking and lending support or to open an account, and you’ll reach a live agent 24/7. You can also open an account at FNBO.com.

FNBO has mobile banking apps for both iPhone and Android, and the apps come with free FICO credit score monitoring. The Google Play store has a user rating of 4.6 stars, although recent reviews frequently mention trouble using the app. The Apple App Store has 4.8 stars.

FNBO highlights its commitment to community impact and environmental sustainability, but the bank’s track record is mixed. In 2024, FNBO contributed over $7.5 million to nonprofit organizations. But according to Bank.Green, a company that rates banks’ environmental policies and impact, FNBO “falls short in climate responsibility.”

Additionally, in 2016, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ordered FNBO to pay over $32 million to its credit card customers for illegal charges the bank made.

Customer support is available 24/7 at 800-642-0014. You can write to FNBO using this address:

First National Bank of Omaha

P.O. Box 3128

Omaha, NE 68103

Yes, FNBO is an FDIC-insured bank. Your deposits are protected up to the federal limits.

FNBO’s routing number is 104000016.

FNBO is a reliable bank that’s been in business for over 150 years. This bank has received relatively low ratings from customers, but it has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.

FBNO has Zelle available through online banking or through the bank’s mobile apps.
