Your 401(k) During a Leave of Absence
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

Sometimes you need to step away from work on a leave of absence. Maybe you’re home with a new baby. Maybe you’re healing, caring for family, or taking a much-needed mental health break. Many participants wonder: What happens to my 401(k) while I’m away?

The short answer: your retirement account stays safe but your contributions and employer match may pause. If you’re with Slavic401k, your account is always accessible, secure, and still working for you.

Your 401(k) Account Stays Intact During a Leave of Absence

Your 401(k) doesn’t vanish or pause just because you’re not actively working. Money already in your account remains invested. The money you’ve already contributed (and any earnings) continues to grow or fluctuate based on the market.

Your existing investments will keep doing their thing, compounding interest doesn’t take a vacation. You can log in anytime using the Slavic401k portal or mobile app. Check balances, review investments, or adjust your strategy.

Contributions May Pause

If your leave is unpaid, you typically won’t have a paycheck to deduct 401(k) contributions from. This also means you may miss employer matching funds during your time away.

If your leave is paid (either partially or fully), contributions may continue. It depends on your employer’s policy and your contribution preferences. You may be able to adjust contribution rates before your leave starts.

With Slavic401k, you can change your contribution rate before your leave starts. This can help maximize your savings. Want to stay ahead? Increase your contribution rate before you leave. With Slavic401k, it’s easy to do. Even a small bump now can help make up for the pause later.

Employer Match Rules Still Apply

Most employers match only when you contribute. No contributions = no match.

Employer matches are tied to your payroll contributions. If you’re not contributing, you may not receive matching funds during your absence. Some employers offer a “true-up” match at year-end. This can help you catch up if you meet annual contribution thresholds later.

Check with your HR or benefits team to see how your plan handles matches during leave.

Vesting Continues — Sometimes

Vesting means how much of the employer match is yours to keep.

Some leave, like FMLA leave, counts toward your vesting service time. Personal or unpaid leave may not count toward vesting. Your Slavic401k account always shows your vested balance.

You’re Still in Control During a Leave of Absence

Even while you’re away, you can still log in to your account, rebalance your investments, change your contribution rate for when you return, or explore additional retirement strategies.

Taking a leave can also be a good time to review your portfolio and make sure it’s aligned with your long-term goals.

Plan Ahead Before Your Leave Starts

Want to soften the impact of a leave? Try these:

Review your plan rules on contributions, matches, and vesting during leave. Increase contributions in the months before your leave if your budget allows. Set calendar reminders to revisit your plan when you return.

Your 401(k) will still be there when you come back from leave and ready for you to pick up where you left off. The biggest impact is usually the missed contributions and matches, but with a little planning, you can minimize the long-term effect.
