Marugame Udon, known for its Japanese cuisine, has signed a master franchise agreement with Karali Group to further expand in the UK and Ireland.
Marugame Udon’s transition from corporate-owned outlets to a fully franchised model is set to streamline operations and enhance market penetration.
Karali Group, led by Salim Janmohamed and Karim Janmohamed, will head the development of new restaurant locations.
Karali Group has also taken the operational reins of the existing Marugame Udon estate, which includes eight restaurants in London and one regional site in Reading.
Marugame Udon International president Victor Misawa stated: “Since introducing Marugame Udon to the UK in 2021, we have been overwhelmed by the warm welcome from customers.”
Marugame Udon’s journey in the UK began in 2021 through a joint venture between Toridoll Holdings and Capdesia Group.
Capdesia Group then exited its investment in July 2024.
Misawa added: “Today, Marugame Udon proudly serves thousands of udon lovers every day, each bowl prepared fresh in our lively open kitchens.
“With nine restaurants now open, we’re thrilled to partner with Karali Group to bring our brand to even more communities. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our amazing team members, partners and customers.”
The Karali Group’s portfolio is diverse, featuring franchises across sectors including fast food and casual dining. Its UK portfolio includes Taco Bell and Crosstown Doughnuts.

A transition is in progress to ensure a changeover for customers and employees.
Sam McIntyre, interim CEO and finance director, will facilitate the transition before assuming a new leadership role with Marugame Udon USA.
