Understanding Current SSA Backlogs And What It May Mean For Your Disability Benefits Claim

Currently, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is grappling with a significant challenge: an understaffed workforce struggling to manage an ever-growing backlog of Social Security Disability (SSD) claims. According to SSA data, Social Security’s workforce has shrunk from nearly 67,000 employees in 2010 to about 56,000 now – a 27-year low. This situation not only affects the agency but has real, tangible impacts on the lives of countless Americans who rely on disability benefits for their survival. If you’ve applied for benefits or are about to begin the process, here’s what you should know.

About the SSA Staffing Crisis

The SSA faces a staffing crisis exacerbated by years of budget cuts, high turnover rates, and a wave of retirements. The SSA is the agency responsible for administering Social Security programs, including SSD, and is experiencing staffing levels well below what is needed to meet demand. This inadequacy has led to extended wait times for disability claimants, and it is possible to have to wait months – or even years – for a decision.

SSD Backlogs: A Growing Concern

The backlog of SSD claims has reached alarming levels. As of February 2024, SSA’s pending actions backlog reached an all-time high of 5.2 million pending actions, resulting in $1.1 billion in improper payments. For many, these benefits represent a lifeline, covering essential living expenses such as housing, food, and medical care.

Impacts of Understaffing on the SSD Claim Process

Extended wait times. With fewer employees to process claims, applicants face longer wait times. The average processing time for an SSD claim has now stretched beyond 12 months, leaving many without much-needed financial support.
Increased stress and anxiety. The uncertainty surrounding their claims can be overwhelming for applicants. The lengthy process can affect existing health conditions and lead to increased mental health issues. Many claimants feel hopeless and frustrated as they navigate a complex and often confusing system.
Quality of decision-making. Being understaffed also affect the quality of decision-making. With fewer resources available, employees may be rushed, leading to errors or oversights in evaluating claims. This can result in wrongful denials, which may lead to further appeals and a prolonged process.
Impacts on appeals. When claims are denied, applicants often turn to the appeals process. A lack of sufficient staff to handle appeals means that even those wrongfully denied face additional delays in receiving their benefits.

Our Disability Lawyers Are On Your Side

The understaffing of the SSA has created a domino effect of uncertainty for SSD claimants, with a backlog that may undermine the very purpose of the program: to provide support for those unable to work due to disability. At Disability Attorneys of Michigan, we know you are much more than just a number. That’s why we treat your case like our own, giving it the attention it deserves to help ensure that you receive the life-changing benefits you may be entitled to by law. Speak with us for free today. We won’t get paid until you do.
