Google has reportedly decided to cancel the development of the Pixel Tablet 3, according to multiple industry sources close to the project. The device, internally known as “Project Quince,” will not be moving forward. Sources familiar with the matter say Google made this decision last week.
Internal communications and meetings took place to inform the teams involved. The personnel previously assigned to the Pixel Tablet 3 project are being redirected to other initiatives within the company. This development follows Google’s recent efforts in the tablet market, including the launch of the Pixel Tablet in 2023.
Canceling the Pixel Tablet 3 significantly shifts Google’s hardware roadmap.
Google cancels Pixel Tablet 3 development
Information about this strategic change has begun to circulate, typically indicating that the decision is final and has moved beyond internal discussions to affecting external partnerships.
The cancellation of the Pixel Tablet 3 shows that Google wasn’t really serious about tablets after launching the Google Pixel Tablet in 2023. However, this only affects the hardware side, as the Android team is continuing to develop features for tablets and foldable devices. The Pixel Tablet was marketed as a “premium” tablet from Google, yet it looked a lot like a cheap tablet from Five Below.
The redeeming quality of the Pixel Tablet was the speaker dock, which was included in the package, as well as the price. It was relatively affordable compared to other premium tablets like the iPad Air and iPad Pro, as well as Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S series. This effectively means that the Pixel Tablet 3, when it launches next year, will be a lame duck tablet.
